I’ve never been one for drinking a glass of milk and, honestly, I can take or leave cheese most of the time. But when I’m pregnant? Suddenly I crave those things like no one’s business—which is likely my body’s amazing response to those growing babies’ needs for calcium.

Expectant mama Khloe Kardashian is right there with me: Speaking to People, her nutritionist, Dr. Philip Goglia, says the typically strict star is easing up with her diet during pregnancy. “She’s added a smidge of dairy, and she makes sure to have good, consistent eating patterns and proper exercise protocols,” Goglia says, adding Kardashian is “doing great.”

Although it’s just “a smidge,” the addition of dairy is big for Kardashian, who said in 2016 that she lost 11 lbs. by cutting cheese and milk from her eating plan. But now that she is pregnant, her concern is helping her baby grow big and strong—and calcium is essential for that.

According to a report in the Journal of Perinatal Education, the average calcium demand of a fetus during the third trimester is 250 mcg. per day, which helps strengthen baby’s rapidly developing skeleton. The researchers note, “If the mother does not have adequate dietary calcium preconceptionally and during the pregnancy, significant maternal bone density could be lost, possibly putting her at risk for osteoporosis later in life.”

Of course, there are great ways to get calcium from non-dairy sources: dark greens, sunflower seeds, sweet potatoes, figs and even some types of fish can all contribute to that daily calcium quota.

To really safe-guard yourself, Dr. Holly Ruhl tells Motherly that calcium supplements may be worth considering. As a bonus, she writes, “If you’re experiencing morning sickness, a calcium antacid can work wonders for your troubled tummy.”

Or you could be like me and enjoy a nightly bowl of ice cream. ?

It sounds like Kardashian’s “smidge” doesn’t include a daily sundae and she’s also keeping up with a healthy exercise regimen. “She’s just a warrior,” Goglia says. “She really is fitness; it’s what defines her.”

Kardashian did catch a bit of flak for continuing to work out during pregnancy, but the fact is moderate exercise isn’t only safe, it’s proven to be beneficial for mamas and babies.

“My doctor wants me to work out everyday if I could, so I’m doing doctor’s orders and I feel good,” Kardashian said last month. “I don’t have swollen feet, I don’t have a lot of these things because I’m staying so active right now. So, as long as I can, I want to keep that up.”

Between working out and eating well, it’s clear Kardashian’s baby’s health is her top priority—and it sure is easier to follow medical advice when it includes orders to snack on some more cheese.
