“We switch kids all the time,” Bell says.
When it comes to parenting their two daughters, Bad Moms star Kristen Bell and husband Dax Shepard take a tag team approach. When one parent needs a break, the other parent steps in.
Mom to 2-year-old Delta and 4-year-old Lincoln, Bell says being able to tap her co-parent in before becoming frustrated is good for kids and helps keep the family balanced.
“Because if I’m talking to the 2½-year-old, and I’m done, I’ll just be like, ‘We’ve got to switch. I don’t want to talk to this kid anymore,’” explains Bell. According to People, the actress explained that it’s not about ignoring her kids, it’s about giving them the attention they deserve in the way they deserve.
“You don’t want to be reactive to your kids. You want to be thoughtful, and you want to be setting a good example,” she said, adding that she’s not afraid to cry in front over kids, but explains to them why she’s sad when that happens.
Bell’s comments about her tag team approach to raising two kids echo comments made by her Bad Moms 2 co-star, Mila Kunis, earlier this year.
“I will only have two,” Kunis told People. “Right now, we’re fine. One hand, one hand. One eye, one eye. Two people, two kids,” she said. In Bell’s house, too, that’s a winning parent-to-kid ratio.
Praising her parenting partner, Bell says Shepherd seems to always be one step ahead of the kids, but it’s something she has a hard time doing, especially when she hasn’t slept well. In fact, the star says a lack of sleep is the hardest part of motherhood.
“I think that fuels everything. It fuels my lack of patience with my kids sometimes,” she said. “If I had had a full night’s rest, I would be able to be more patient with them sometimes.”
Hopefully Bell can get more sleep in the future, but until then, it’s awesome that she’s got a parenting partner to be there when she has to tap out.
