Baby’s Sex: It’s a surprise!

How would you describe your pregnant style?

Up until about 26 weeks, you could describe my pregnancy style in one word: leggings! I seriously lived in them. Now that it’s warmer out and I finally have a real ‘bump’–I was in that awkward in-between stage forever –I find myself gravitating toward simple, versatile basics like fitted dresses, structured jackets and flat sandals. The goal is to feel comfortable but polished –which is my guiding principle for non-maternity dressing, too.

Have you had any challenges learning to dress your body during this pregnancy?

Oh heck yes. I’ve actually found that besides the basics (tank tops, leggings, a pair of life-saving Paige maternity jeans) maternity pieces generally don’t work on me. The dresses are either cut like tents or they have an empire waistline that makes me feel frumpy-dumpy, like I should be waddling down the sidewalk. After ordering and (subsequently returning) dozens of maternity dresses online, I’ve finally conceded that (stretchy and forgiving) non-maternity styles are much more flattering. It takes more effort to find the pieces that work, but when I do, I really love them –they feel like me, not some caricature of a pregnant lady.

So far, what has surprised you most during your pregnancy?

Probably how quickly things change. Just when I was getting used to the perma-hangover that was my first trimester, I woke up at 12 weeks and felt like superwoman. My energy and strength was sky-high during my second trimester (I actually looked forward to hitting the gym, which was weird) and then I woke up one day at 29 weeks with fatigue and body aches I just can’t seem to shake. I was also surprised by how quickly my bump just appeared overnight. I’m still getting used to it! I’ll walk by a mirror, and it will totally catch me off guard. Like, “whoa, who is that?!”

What’s been your favorite pregnancy piece or brand to show off your bump?

Stretchy, body-con dresses –no question about it. Most of the styles I’ve been rocking lately are dresses I already owned, but I’ve also picked up a few new pieces (like this Old Navy style in black) that are on seriously heavy rotation.

What NYC experience are you most looking forward to sharing with your baby?

My favorite time of day in the city is early morning, when it’s still quiet. So I can’t wait to stroll around my neighborhood or Washington Square Park this summer with baby, husband and dog in tow!
