We're true believers in less is more. Especially when we’re talking about toxins. While a lot of nail polishes no longer contain formaldehyde, toluene or dibutyl phthalate, some have gone the extra mile to remove formaldehyde resin. And although there’s no proof that using your usual polish has any adverse affect on your unborn child, there are still those that would rather err on the side of caution—it’s only nine months, after all. Why not cut out as many toxins as possible, especially when the alternatives to the mainstream are this good?

Here are four pregnancy-safe nail polishes you’ll be using way after baby arrives.

With the most fashion-friendly range of catwalk-inspired colors I’ve seen in a four-free range, Kure Bazaar is definitely the style maven’s polish of choice. The paler colors will take a couple of coats, so don’t expect it to be as fast as a gel manicure, but they last as well as any conventional varnish. $16

Water-based and odorless, these little pots of joy were formulated for children who went after their mama’s mani, catering to the urban sophisticates of London and New York. But what could be more perfect for a mama-to-be’s nails? The downside is that the wash-off formula won’t last past your first toilet break, but it’s easy to reapply. $13

Zoya – another ‘natural’ polish free from toluene, formaldehyde, phthalates and camphor - has the best range of textures and colors, with over 300 to choose from and four extra seasonal collections each year. $9

Orly is the brand I most often see being used backstage at shows and shoots – it lends itself well to nail art and comes in a vast range of finishes. The gel system is seriously impressive, so you don’t have to give up that longer-lasting formula through pregnancy – there is now a four-free option. $8.50
