If you're anything like me, you're in a bit of a style rut at the moment.
Living in loungewear was nice for the first few weeks of the pandemic—but now? Let's just say I'm ready to step it up in the style department—albeit in ways that are practical, easy and affordable, of course… not to mention casual enough to suit my current lifestyle, which involves hanging out at home or outdoors to minimize COVID risks.
So here's what I'm going to do: I'm going to hack my closet and challenge myself to wear my staples in new ways.
And I'm turning to TikTok for inspiration as I do this. The app is chock full of adorable (and totally wearable!) style inspo. Like many of you, I have my hands full with two toddlers and I'm not exactly a teenager anymore—so versatility, practicality and longevity are key for me when I buy clothing. And I'm here to tell you: These videos are less about those micro-trends and more about finding fun new ways to approach old standby pieces.
Here are some of the best videos you should check out if you want to get major mileage out of the basics you almost certainly have on hand. And if you're looking to upgrade those basics? Well, let's just say you'll definitely get that bang for your buck, mama.
A T-shirt dress
T-shirt dresses are such a great mom staple (not to mention perfect for our current situation—they're comfy enough to wear around the house, but cute enough to wear for socially distant outings). We love this ultra trendy (yet so easy to throw together) outfit, which would work so well with any shirt dress in your arsenal.
A black dress
Fact: A black dress is the perfect topper to just about any day or night outfit and this video proves it.
A plain white T-shirt
It's arguably the classic of all classics, but we can always use some inspiration when it comes to making the basic white tee look less, well, basic. Break out a slightly fitted tee and spice it up with a studded belt, crisp blazer or printed midi skirt. These ideas are all so put-together and chic.
If you thought bike shorts were only for teenagers and Kim Kardashian West, think again. This mama shows off some seriously wearable, trendy (but not too trendy) looks. The best part? These work for mamas and their kids.
There's something so edgy and fun about a fedora. Whether you borrow one from your dad or buy one for yourself, the vibe is oh-so effortless. This video shows you to make this incredibly cool item look even cooler.
A crewneck sweatshirt
There's really nothing better than a simple crewneck sweatshirt—they're cozy, simple and work year-round. We adore the idea of layering this simple sweatshirt staple over (or under!) another top to create an unexpected look.
As most mamas know, leggings are basically indispensable. We probably didn't need any additional reasons to wear ours, but here it is: A clip featuring three super chic, elevated outfits built around the ultimate mama necessity.
A button-down shirt
Many of us are staying home or working from home right now, but there are so many ways to make this workday staple work when you're out of office. Pulling it off the shoulders? A perfect date night look. And turning that button-down backwards? Genius.
A denim skirt
There's something so youthful and sweet about a denim mini skirt—and while you probably rocked yours with Uggs back in the day, there are so many other ways to style the item. And, these are a bit more seasonally appropriate.
An oversized college sweatshirt
Mama, the moment you've been waiting for is here: We've finally found a way (actually, multiple ways!) to make that ultra-comfy college sweatshirt you just can not part with look chic. Hooray!
