Home / Health & Wellness / Fitness Pregnancy Yoga: Open Chair Twist Stretch and strengthen with this 5-minute pregnancy pose. By Jessica Pallay February 29, 2016 Rectangle While you may have heard that twisting during pregnancy is a no-no, if done correctly, a prenatal yoga twist can actually be quite beneficial. Below, NYC yogi Anna Gannon walks us through an Open Chair Twist that perfect for pregnancy and beyond. “Chair pose keeps your legs and hips strong which is very helpful during labor when you need those muscles to help you push. The open twist offers a nice stretch for your low back and the light support of your elbow on your thigh feels very spacious and opening.” Here’s how to get into an Open Chair Twist: Stand with your feet hip distance apart (two fist in-between your feet is a good measure). Bend your knees and sink your hips back as if you are sitting in a chair. Look down at your toes and make sure you can see them, if you can’t sit further back. Relax your right elbow on top of your right thigh and soften your right hand on top of your left knee. Raise your left arm up and open to the left. Hold for a few easy breaths and then repeat on the other side. Photography by Ana Schechter for Well Rounded NY.
