Just the thought of swallowing prenatal vitamins makes me cringe as I was one of the pregnant women who felt nauseous every time I had to consume one. At first, I switched over to the gummy version, but that didn’t work as well for me either. After much research and contemplation, I decided on isolating the most important nutrients: Iron, Folic acid and DHA.

I realize my solution is not necessarily appropriate for everyone. In fact, the concept of a prenatal vitamin is really to cover a recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals. The idea of ensuring that your daily diet is “complete” is a lot harder than we may think, and with pregnancy, we need consistency. Most people just don’t have the time to consume the varied and wholesome diet recommended for pregnancy, so the vitamin in pill form is essentially a “no excuse” recommendation. But, what if we could eat our prenatal essentials? Wouldn’t it make us feel better and also perhaps enjoy the experience of ingesting these much needed vitamins?

In the last year, the concept of prenatal vitamins has evolved. Now, not only can you consume multivitamin chewable gummies, but even prenatal biscuits from a brand called ERZO. Launched by the same founders as Blueprint Cleanse, ERZO offers 5 different flavor varieties (including one gluten free) and each box contains 5 packs of 3 biscuits. A serving size is one packet of 3 biscuits. It’s essentially a snack and a prenatal essential in one. I say this because 1 packet is roughly 190 calories, which for many is a mini-meal/snack. ERZO’s recommendation is one packet per day, and while it can replace your prenatal pills, I’d still advise to focus on consuming a varied and wholesome diet.

It looks like edible prenatals might be the next big trend: in addition to ERZO, Happy Family just launched The Happy Mama Prenatal collection which includes vitamin and nutrient-dense fruit and veggie squeeze packs as well as soft-baked oat bars, probiotic supplements and chewable gummies. First Response, too, has a new line of prenatal gummies.

Perhaps these are the solutions we’ve been asking for … finally!?
