As the third trimester rolls around, we’re onto the not-so-pleasant pregnancy issue. This includes swelling, also referred to as edema. During pregnancy, the body retains fluid in order to allow for the expansion for the developing baby. While the extra fluid helps prepare us for delivery (we produce 50% more blood and body fluids during this time!), it also can show up in the hands, face, legs, ankles and feet.
Swelling tends to become worse with these factors:
Strenuous activity for long periods
Excessive caffeine consumption
Standing for long periods
Excessive sodium consumption
