We all know wearing a seatbelt is an important safety measure, but it’s especially vital when you are pregnant. In a recent video posted to TikTok, a specialist emergency room doctor explains how to properly wear a seatbelt during your 3rd trimester. She was prompted to create the video after treating a woman in late pregnancy who was involved in a car accident and had revealed that she was wearing her seatbelt across her bump. At 34 weeks herself, Dr. Katie demonstrates in the video the correct way to wear a seatbelt as well as how far back you should be if you are the one driving the car. Safety first, mamas.

Do you know the safest way to wear a seatbelt during pregnancy?

As stated in The Motherly Guide to Becoming Mama, “When you strap yourself in, place the shoulder belt against your shoulder, center it between your breasts, and then place it down the side (not on top) of your belly. The lap belt should sit snugly under your belly bump.” Dr. Katie offers the same information in her video, as well as noting that if you are the one driving the car, your seat should be back as far as safely possible to minimize the impact of an air bag hitting you in the belly should an accident occur.

In the pregnancy car safety video, which now has over 11,000 likes on TikTok, Dr. Katie also says, “If you are involved in a car accident, no matter how minor it is, you must go see your obstetrician or midwife because even minor accidents can cause complications for you and your baby.”

When you’re pregnant, just getting in and out of the car can be a struggle. Putting on your seatbelt properly should be the easiest part of the process. Thanks for the reminder, Dr. Katie! You’ve got this, mamas.
