In Focus: Pelvic Floor Health

Our most intimate parts finally have a technology to call their own.

In Focus: Pelvic Floor Health

This week, the women's health world is abuzz about a new technology just for us girls: Elvie. Elvie is a personal trainer for your pelvic floor--i.e. a Kegel trainer. You insert it into your pelvic floor region, then partake in 5-minute workouts (the infamous kegels) for the pelvic floor, while your iPhone or Android tracks the activity, and charts the momentum.

A lot of us, myself included, don't spend a whole lot of time thinking about our pelvic floors. But as a health professional, here's a few basics I did know:

  • The pelvic floor is an important part of a strong core.
  • Women don't spend enough time and attention to these muscles.
  • A weak core can cause low back pain.
  • Pregnancy and childbirth can weaken your core.

But what I did not know is that 1 in 3 women have pelvic floor problems. That's pretty significant!

So that got me thinking... we spend so much time on our iPhones, iPads and computers that it was inevitable a technological solution would be the answer. Combine that with the explosion of the virtual personal trainer concept (i.e. Wello, GAIN, Nike Training Club), and the fact that most of us (especially women) don't do enough to take care of ourselves, well, a product like Elvie was a no-brainer.

Elvie's not the first, or only, option for our pelvic floors--a similar technology called KGoal hit the market earlier this year, and HelloFlo now has a video class devoted to strengthening your pelvic floor. It's really eye-opening to see a whole product category focusing on women's reproductive health.

We're supposed to be a mom, a wife, the head of our household. We're supposed to find time to work, sleep and play. We're supposed to remember our annual check-ups from our OBGYNS and do monthly self breast examinations. It's no wonder our core sometimes get neglected. I hope these pelvic floor products are just the start of a more attentive future for women's health.
