When we were first asked to be the speakers at the guaranteed-to-be-chic Cocktail Party for Mom-preneurs, hosted by Fashionable Hostess Amanda Gluck and Beyond Mom Randi Zinn, our obvious response was, “Uh, yes!” Then reality set in, and we panicked a little at the thought of speaking to a room full of smart entrepreneurial women about our past year as Well Rounded NY (yes, our first birthday is right around the corner!). We thought long and hard about what would hopefully interest these women and what would be of value. We are true believers in this idea of going Beyond Mom. Being a mom is so gratifying, but we were, in fact, women before we were moms. And as women -- even women with kids -- we are still inspired to do other things. Ironically, in our case becoming a mom inspired us to create a business that will hopefully help and inspire other women at one of the most transitional moments in their lives: pregnancy. As we spoke that night, we realized that we were speaking to our peers. We were only one story that Randi was kind enough to decide to spotlight that evening, and it eased the nerves. It’s comforting being in a room filled with similar paths, goals and challenges. As expected Amanda Gluck, the fashionable hostess herself, outdid in every aspect of the evening. Being the good hostess that she is, she offered delicious bites and good wine that the wonderful folks at Uproot were kind enough to supply, and put she put together goodie bags filled with brands like Michael Aram, Simple and Crisp, Mustela, Mackenzie and Childs, Alba Botanica, FLOWER Beauty, Soul Cycle, Jam with Jamie, Elaine Turner and Kim Seybert. Randi filled the room with inspiring women that we chatted up way past the time on our invitations (always the sign of a good party, right?). There were familiar faces of women we admire such as Grace Lee from Nine Naturals, Sasadi Odunsi of Bump Brooklyn, Emily Hsu from Au Lait, and so many more. It’s those women in particular, and similar women that weren’t necessarily in the room that night, that helped us grow Well Rounded NY. That continue to help us grow Well Rounded NY everyday. And for that, we are excited -- and so grateful -- to be part of the Beyond Mom Community. Photography by Mad Wolf Photography
Just about all of us had set assumptions about raising kids before we became parents ourselves. Some of these ideas might have been based on our own ideas of how we would absolutely do things differently than everyone else. Others, we believed what everyone else told us would happen would apply to our littles, too. But, that's not always the case, mama.
