President Biden spoke with the family and daughter of George Floyd following yesterday’s verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin. The jury found Chauvin guilty on all three counts against him in the death of George Floyd.

Last evening, Biden addressed the nation in response to a trial that has once again amplified the serious and deadly epidemic of racism against Black Americans and police brutality, specifically. The death of George Floyd (and countless other Black lives lost before and since) prompted hundreds of protests against racial injustice across the country. While calling the verdict a “step forward”, he acknowledged systemic racism continues to permeate our country in all walks of life, including policing.

Biden then remarked that he was able to speak with Floyd’s daughter, Gianna, and recalled their first meeting at her father’s funeral last year.

During the meeting, Biden told Floyd’s then 6-year-old daughter “how brave she was” while holding her hand. Biden said he told her that Floyd is “looking down on you, he’s so proud.”

During yesterday’s conversation, recalling Gianna’s powerful words, “Daddy changed the world,” Biden told her, “Daddy did change the world. Let that be his legacy.”
