On Saturday, Kamala Harris made history once again when she became the first sitting Vice President to attend and walk in a Pride parade. Joined by her husband, the Second Gentleman, Doug Emhoff, the couple walked in Washington D.C.’s Capitol Pride, ending with a rally at Freedom Plaza.

Harris spoke briefly at the event, where she advocated for the passing of the Equality Act while reiterating her and President Biden’s commitment to LGBTQ+ rights. “We need to make sure that our transgender community and our youth are all protected. We need, still, protections around employment and housing,” Harris said, according to NBC Washington. “There is so much more work to do, and I know we are committed.”

For any LGBTQ+ young people and their parents, particularly those who may be struggling, Harris’ participation in Capitol Pride sends a clear message that this administration values them and their rights as individuals.

In fact, the Biden/Harris administration has made LGBTQ+ issues one of their priorities. One of President Biden’s first executive orders was calling for an end to discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation. They have also restored transgender healthcare protections and removed Donald Trump’s ban on transgender military members.

Kamala Harris’s message of equality and inclusivity at Saturday’s march and the work of the administration is a major win for LGBTQ+ people, especially young people and their families.
