Just one glorious day aaalll about you. Sounds like perfection right about now doesn’t it, new mama? Learning to be the perfect diaper-changing, baby-soothing, breast-feeding goddess is harder than Instagram made it appear. Exhausting even. We get it. But taking care of you is just as important as taking care of baby. Because a happy and healthy mom is exactly what baby needs. This is where the Mama Moon comes into play.
Earlier this week, we showed you how one New York mama-to-be spent her last days of pregnancy indulging in some me-time at Equinox’s luxe East 74th Street location, and it made us drool with bump (and time!) envy. But then we remembered that we mamas could do that too. Sure, it might not be an endless day of spa and yoga, but sometimes as a mama, all it takes is knowing that baby is in good hands at a place like Equinox’s Kid’s Club, and the ability to take a shower without baby tears on the other side, to make you feel human again. Mama Moons are highly encouraged post-baby. On a very regular basis. Especially when it involves getting those endorphins on the up and up.
With a schedule filled to the brim, no one knows what we’re talking about more than new mama, spin enthusiast and founder of Terez, Zara Terez Tisch. We recently caught up with her during her own lovely Mama Moon at the Equinox High Line, which with their latest cycling class experience, The Pursuit, was the perfect place to find out how this spin enthusiast is getting back into the workout saddle.
Why is taking time for own health and fitness so important?
Between being a new mom and running a company, I can get exhausted pretty easily. I have found that working out not only makes me feel good but also energizes both my mind and body so that I am able and happy to do all the things I need to do.
What are some of your favorite things to do at the gym?
Spinning is by far my favorite thing to do.
How are you navigating taking time for yourself now that baby has arrived?
It isn’t easy. My calendar has become my life and I want to make sure that I get as much time with my baby as possible. As everyone has told me, these moments go by so fast, so I try to make sure to have time carved out everyday that I get to spend just with her.
Tell us about your perfect afternoon (or hour) to yourself.
Because my mind is constantly churning, I love to try to turn it off and give it a break. I live in the West Village, so it’s always fun for me to walk to the Highline and then drop into Equinox for a sweat. I’d end my afternoon cuddled up on the couch watching the newest movie that came out.
A lot of women get nervous about hitting the gym after baby — what advice would you give women to help them get back into it?
I’m not going to lie, I was pretty scared. After months of not stepping foot inside a gym, the thought of getting back into it frightened me. It’s kind of like jumping into a cold pool — you are so nervous and then you finally just JUMP! It’s refreshing! You just need to do it at your own pace. If you are taking a class, don’t feel pressured to keep up with the rest of the room. You know your body, so all you have to do is listen to it.
How does working out help you balance being a mom and entrepreneur?
Working out helps gives me “me time.” In order to be a great mom and entrepreneur, I need to be the best version of ME. Working out has allowed me to take time for myself with no distractions.
