Every person who has ever been pregnant and rocked a bump struggles with the same maternity wardrobe -related conundrums. Knowing what to buy, when to buy it and how to feel like yourself when your body is growing and changing by the minute can be overwhelming to say the least. Luckily, there are people like Hatch Collection founder, Ariane Goldman who have made it their mission to help mamas effortlessly outfit their changing bodies from the first trimester all the way through. Since its launch in 2011, Hatch has developed a well-deserved cult following, spotted on everyone from Meghan Markle to Natalie Portman. The curated collection features elevated basics like buttery-soft tees, slouch dresses and versatile one-piece jumpsuits in luxe fabrics that are as suitable for a night out as they are for cozying up on the couch. What’s more, each piece is designed to be worn well beyond pregnancy. The modern and drapey cuts seamlessly transition into your post-pregnancy wardrobe, so much so that some fans of the brand admit to re-buying their favorites even after giving birth. ” The intention behind the brand was to create pieces that are smart, thoughtful, really well-made and go the distance so that as your body changes and you’re growing, you’re investing in pieces that grow with you, ” Goldman tells me. It’s that philosophy that makes Hatch the ideal brand for building a maternity capsule wardrobe . Forget fast fashion. Instead, invest in high-performing, quality pieces that can be worn several times a week in a variety of ways. Not only is it better for the planet, but if you consider cost-per-wear, it’s an approach that can save you money in the long run.

I recently asked Goldman how to do just that. Read on for her thoughts on maternity wardrobe essentials, where to splurge and the one rule you can totally break while rocking the bump.

On how to feel more like yourself during pregnancy

“Beauty to me is defined by confidence and strength. So when you feel good about yourself, that gives you that confidence. When you put on something beautiful that makes you feel like you’re doing your best or looking as good as possible—that kind of makes it all feel good. When you put some of these pieces, they do the job for you. I think that helps combat some of the unknowns that happen when women are pregnant. Feeling good about yourself is about the confidence of knowing ‘I’ve got this’ and putting things on—whether it’s lotions and potions or beautiful underpinnings or clothing—that make you feel good leads to a great day.”

Hatch Collection Eliza Dress

Hatch Collection Eliza dress The grow-with-me design of Hatch’s soft and stretchy Eliza dress makes it a feel-good staple from the first trimester through postpartum. And because it looks just as polished with fresh white sneakers as it does a pair of leopard pumps, there’s no limit to where you can rock it.

On thinking beyond basic black + the one fashion myth pregnant mamas shouldn’t listen to

“The good news is with the rise of social media, women in fashion and editors are turning the phone and Instagram on themselves to show that they can rock the bump and feel good. What I love about this moment is that pregnant women and non-pregnant women can dress the same. You don’t have to be ostracized from fashion during pregnancy anymore. You can feel fantastic and rock the sequins if you wish. Black is always a safe option, and we’ll always cut our best pieces in black, but going with a little color or stripe is ok! I think a lot of us have this myth that stripes make you look wide, but [at Hatch], stripes are our number one trend. They just work to make you feel like you’re on-trend, yet also kind of subtle and not too loud. But I think for Holiday when this pandemic is behind us a little bit, people are going to come out in sequins and rainbows—pregnant or not.”
