Each year, on March 8th, we celebrate International Women's Day. It's globally recognized as a day to celebrate women's achievements (you know, besides the whole "birthing everyone" thing), raise awareness about women's equality and rally for change because we're not yet where we need to be. All over the world, women are still fighting for equal pay, access to education, reproductive rights, and to simply live in a safe environment.
This year's International Women's Day theme is #ChoosetoChallenge, calling on us to examine and think critically about our own thoughts and actions. What can each of us do to celebrate the work of women and promote gender equality everyday, no matter what the calendar says?
One thing I can do? Share with you some of the incredible women-owned businesses that make helping, educating and supporting women part of their mission. As a surprise to no one, women are out here doing a bang-up job taking care of other women through building businesses of integrity that truly help to shape the future into one we can be proud of.
As my favorite long-hair swinging, outrageous costume-wearing, singularly named ageless icon Cher so wisely said, "Women are the real architects of society."
Here are some of the most thoughtful and inspiring women-owned businesses to support this March (and every other month of the year!)
Empowering women is at the heart of LA-based jeweler and apothecary The Rode. Founded by friends Fie and Jess, who both owned businesses in the heart of Downtown for years, they witnessed first-hand the overwhelming issue of homelessness. In 2019, Fie began working with women living on Skid Row and knew there was more she could do. As a team with combined backgrounds in business development, jewelry design and fashion wholesale, they charted a course toward supporting local women by creating opportunities for employment and a chance to overcome their circumstances. All of their gorgeous jewelry, hand soap and candles are handmade by local women at The Rode Workshop in Los Angeles.

The first plant-based feminine care system, created by women for women, The Honey Pot was founded by Bea Dixon after an ancestor came to her in a dream. Armed with spirit, knowledge and a desire to heal herself, she set to work creating what other brands couldn't—using the power of herbs. The Honey Pot has also teamed up with Happy Period, an organization that provides menstrual hygiene kits to those who are homeless, low income, or living in poverty to help extend their mission.
Check out: The postpartum herbal pads. Their blend of natural and herbal ingredients (including mint, lavender and aloe) create a "cooling" effect that soothes soreness and calms cramping after delivery.
After years-long struggles with hormonal acne and coming up short while seeking natural alternatives, Priscilla Tsai founded Cocokind in 2014. Her all-natural, mostly coconut oil-based products are created with one mission in mind: To provide research-backed, conscious and accessible skincare that empowers women.

From first periods through menopause, Lola is a brand that's made by women, for women. Their high-quality, natural feminine care products like organic cotton tampons, sustainable menstrual cups, and even water-based lube support and pamper cycle after cycle. Additionally, they keep advocacy and access at the heart of their mission donating over 5 million period products through the non-profit I Support the Girls to supply LOLA to women in need.
