Simply put, mamas know how to get things done. And when it comes to mom-founded companies , many have begun because a curious mother created something amazing that solved a problem or a question she had in her own parenting experience, and the idea was too good to keep to herself. Whether is was long, sleepless nights due to their baby losing a pacifier over and over again, or filling a need for a more diverse toy landscape, know this: When mothers are a force for change, there is no stopping us.

There’s data to support women-owned businesses as major economic drivers, too. In an article from Business News Daily , it was reported that, “between 2018 and 2019, U.S. women started an average of 1,817 new businesses per day, representing 42% of all businesses. Over the past five years, the number of women-owned businesses went up by 21%, more than double the increase of 9% for all businesses.” Entrepreneurship continues to grow in businesses begun by African American women, Hawaiian and Pacific Islander women and Asian American women, too. And according to Mompowerment , of the women-owned businesses out there, it’s estimated that one in three is owned by a mom (which translates to more than four million businesses). That’s pretty significant!

Support for mom-founded companies (many of whom are already in our Motherly Shop ) is so important. In the spirit of our 2021 State of Motherhood survey , we’ve decided to share some of our favorites below.

These mom-founded companies know what moms are after:

Lark Adventurewear

Pallavi-Golla-and-son

Lark Adventurewear

When Pallavi Golla’s son was born, she noticed that when they would go outside for an extended amount of time, she would stay cool and dry in her adult activewear, and her son, Vyan, would come home hot, sweaty and damp in his clothing. She began searching for safe activewear for babies, but when her search came up empty, she decided to start her own company. Lark Adventurewear is the first and only brand that uses technical fabric for children with exclusive Softek™ that bamboo wicks-moisture away from delicate skin, regulates temperature and is UPF 50+. Golla’s team is devoted to keeping infants and toddlers sweat-free, cool and protected in clothing that is function, fashionable and environmentally-friendly.

Little Likes Kids

Little-Likes-Kids-puzzle

Little Likes Kids was founded by a mom who wanted to have more toy options for her son “that reflected his and his friends’ experiences.” Sharing toys that include images and experiences that reflect her son was a way for this mama to show her son that he was loved, but they were hard to find. Believing there was no need for this sense of scarcity anymore, Little Like Kids was born. From one mama to another, this mompreneur writes, “I want to create a space where the only thing children know is joy.” You can find Little Likes Kids in our Motherly Shop .

Green Sprouts Baby

Green-sprouts-baby

Becky Cannon’s curiosity is what led her to begin Green Sprouts, Inc. After earning a degree in child development, Cannon moved to Japan to study and teach at Muso Yochien, a unique kindergarten that was based on a holistic philosophy, natural foods and connection to nature. While in Japan, Becky had her first child and discovered unique, quality baby products with special functions, made from natural materials and cute designs.

After she moved back to the U.S. and her family continued to grow, she found that she could not find the same quality products, so began importing them from Japan. Curious about natural baby products and making them more accessible here, Green Sprouts Baby began. Cannon says, “I became inspired to provide items for other babies made from healthy and safe materials. My urge to develop products sparked the beginning of the company.” These days, Becky runs Green Sprouts Baby with her daughters and the mission remains the same: to provide healthy and practical products for the well-being and whole development of babies and children, along with resources for parenting naturally.

WubbaNub

WubbaNub

Years ago, while Carla Schneider was on vacation with her family, she noticed that her infant son was unable to relax without his pacifier. Unfortunately, the pacifier was difficult for his hands to grasp, causing him to drop it routinely. Faced with a tearful and tired baby, Carla grabbed the hotel sewing kit and sewed his favorite soft plush toy onto his pacifier. And with that, the first WubbaNub was born. With the support of her family, Carla turned her lightbulb idea into a business. The team at WubbaNub also feels strongly about giving back, and thousands of WubbaNubs have been given to hospital NICUs across the country.

To encourage safe sleep habits, when baby is in their crib, please remove all plush, plush attached to pacifiers , loveys, toys, stuffed animals and decorative items.

Boss Mom Crew

Kendall Mehta

Mompreneur Danielle Melton began Boss Mom Crew when she found her friendships waning after she became a mom. In an essay for Motherly, she writes, “As a working mother trying to balance it all, I began to feel overwhelmed and helpless. I saw my circle of friends become a bit smaller because they weren’t in the same phase of life. I began to feel lonely, and at times—empty. I realized I was missing something important in my life. I was missing connection and community. I needed to fill that void with people who could understand me and my journey as a mother and a working mom.

Creating her own solution and supplying an answer for so many other moms, Melton created Boss Mom Crew , a community for working moms seeking sisterhood, resources and empowerment with the goal of reimagining how career-driven women thrive in motherhood. Now over 8,000 women strong from across the globe, Boss Mom Crew embodies all types of working moms looking for a place to call their own.
