In celebration of Women’s History Month this March, we’re taking a moment to shine a light on some of the most influential women in history—both past and current. In particular, we’re celebrating well-known moms who’ve helped redefine what it means to be a mom and a pioneer, at the same time.

Among the women that come to mind, there are two specific moms, who’ve continued to use their platform to share the realities of motherhood, especially as it pertains to pregnancy, race, and mental health. They are Meghan Markle and Chrissy Teigen. But, they aren’t the only mommies blazing a trail for their kids and raising awareness for social causes and minority groups.

Below is our roundup of baby names inspired by famous mothers.

Politicians and Activists

These historical figures are known for their advocacies both as powerful women and moms: Michelle Obama, Jill Biden, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Amal Clooney, Meghan Markle and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Encourage your little girl to be a trailblazer just like these politicians and activists.

Philanthropists

Moms Sheryl Sandburg and Meena Harris are prominent examples of mothers who are making a difference in the world. Sheryl’s foundation oversees two charities, one of which “empowers women to achieve their ambitions,” and “counter gender stereotypes.”

Meena (also the niece of our VP!) has done quite a bit of philanthropic work herself, including founding her own woman-focused campaign and brand Phenomenal. She’s also written two children books, inspired by her two daughters, aunt, and mom.

Celebrities

Reese Witherspoon, Viola Davis, Mindy Kaling and Blake Lively are all fabulous examples of actresses who’ve excelled in both Hollywood and motherhood. Likewise, fellow actress Jessica Alba created The Honest Company, a brand dedicated to providing safe, clean, and non-toxic products for moms and babies.

Angelina Jolie, Charlize Theron and Hoda Kotb have provided high-profile examples for adopting and shown that motherhood comes in many forms.

Joanna Gaines is another celebrity mom who’s proven it’s possible to be a full-time mom and a highly-successful businesswoman at the same time.

Or perhaps consider naming your daughter after Serena Williams, a tennis pro who’s been a strong advocate for female equality and mom athletes in the sports world.

And then there’s former supermodel and cookbook author, Chrissy Teigen. She holds nothing back, isn’t afraid to ask for advice, and actively champions for human rights. Plus, she’s always sharing the best homemade recipes on Instagram.

Authors

Glennon Doyle has written extensively about her motherhood experience in Untamed, while Mayim Bialik and Laura Prepon have turned from TV to books about motherhood.

Fictional Moms

Fictional characters and their storylines can have just as much of an impact as real-life humans. We’ll always remember book characters like the iconic Bernadette from Where’d You Go, Bernadette, Waverly Jong, both memorable daughter and mother in The Joy Luck Club and White Oleander’s questionable but fascinating Ingrid Magnussen.

Some of our most memorable TV mothers are Camille Braverman from Parenthood, Lorelai Gilmore from Gilmore Girls, Rainbow Johnson from Black-ish, Beth Pearson from This Is Us, and Maysa Hassan from Ramy.
