Maybe you’re the type that had a PSL in hand on September 1st. Or maybe you’re like me, still clinging to an aperol spritz telling anyone who’ll listen, “Um, it’s technically summer until September 23rd, thankyouverymuch.” Whichever camp you’re in though, I think we can all agree on one thing. There’s no better home decor than fall home decor.
As the leaves eventually change and the temps drop, there’s nothing more comforting that transitioning your abode into a den of coziness. But rather than solely leaning into clichéd motifs (“Falling for Fall” throw pillows, we’re looking at you), we’d like to take the opportunity to elegantly fuse autumnal elements with more forward-thinking design.
According to Elizabeth DeCecco, founder of interior styling firm Corduroy + Pine Interiors, when it comes to decorating for fall, “I’ll typically not add anything with writing on it so that it leaves something to the imagination and doesn’t scream “ITS FALL!”
What to do instead? Here are some of the easiest ways to lean into the season and bring that golden light, rich color palette, and cozy vibe into your home.
Bring the foliage colors in–sparingly.
You know the drill. Autumn is all about those warm tones–rich burgundies, deep oranges, and muted golds. However a little goes a long way. Instead of saturating your space with these ubiquitous hues, opt for statement pieces that provide that autumnal touch. DeCecco suggests swapping accents like throw blankets and pillows in a variety of textures. Velvet, flannels, and even knits offer both visual interest and a whole lot of comfort.
Get creative with your pumpkins
And no, we don’t mean attempting some wildly intricate carving that never turns out even remotely as you planned. Instead, reimagine this unofficial emblem of fall. Trade the OG orange motif for more monochromatic varieties, especially in whites or muted greens, to bring a fresh and unexpected twist. Pepper them in with other seasonal accents for a minimalist but still festive look.
Breathe in fall
Ambiance isn’t merely visual. It’s also influenced by fragrance. (There’s a reason chic hotel lobbies often have a signature scent!) Swap out your home diffusers and candles with traditional pumpkin and cinnamon forward blends or opt for richer, understated profiles like cedarwood, vanilla, or leather. The moody, smoky florals of the Cinderose Boy Smells candle feel just right for a dark and crisp fall evening.
Bring the light in
Speaking of candles, as daylight becomes a precious commodity, lighting takes center stage. (Oh, hey there sunset at 4pm, didn’t miss you!) Mix different lights to keep rooms bright and inviting. Some lights for the whole room, some for reading or work, and a few to highlight special spots. We love hurricane lanterns with flameless candles inside for an ambient look that’s safer with kids around.
In the end, autumn is more than just a time for pumpkins and leaves. It’s a chance to refresh our homes, mixing the warm feelings of the season with modern style. With the right choices, your space can feel both cozy and fresh, ready to welcome the days ahead.
