Helpful tips for outdoor entertaining with kids
Set up a kid-friendly zone
If you’ve got lots of little people running around, it can be in everyone’s best interest to designate a specific area just for the kids where they can play, explore, and have fun. Consider providing shade either under the trees or with a tent, and throw in some comfortable seating for parents to supervise and littles to snack or play.
Provide outdoor games and activities
If you’re really feeling fancy, you can organize a variety of outdoor games and activities to keep the kids engaged and entertained. Classic games like sack races, water balloon toss, scavenger hunts, and three-legged races are always a hit. Or, if you’d rather sit back and let the fun organize itself, set up a bubble station, sensory table, a DIY obstacle course, or a mini sports area with hula hoops, frisbees, and stomp rockets for extra fun. Of course you’ll have to referee a squabble here and there, but a girl can dream, right?

Water fun
If the weather permits, incorporate water play into your outdoor entertainment. Set up a kiddie pool, a sprinkler, or a slip ‘n slide for refreshing water fun. If you’ve got littler ones and don’t want to go full on, water tables are a fantastic option. Don’t forget to have plenty of towels, sunscreen, and water toys on hand!
Embrace nature
Encourage kids to connect with nature by incorporating nature-based activities. Set up a nature exploration table with magnifying glasses, bug catchers, and field guides for them to observe and learn about insects, plants, and rocks. Provide materials for leaf rubbings or have a nature-themed arts and crafts station.
DIY outdoor cinema for the ultimate pizza and a movie night
Create a magical outdoor movie experience by setting up a DIY outdoor movie night. Hang a white sheet or use a projector screen, set up blankets, cushions, and snacks. Order some pizzas, or if you really want to make it extra fun, make them at home with a toppings bar for kids to build their own. Choose family-friendly movies that both kids and adults can enjoy together under the starry sky. (And don’t forget copious amounts of bug spray.)

Serve popsicles!
Throughout my kids elementary school years, a friend threw an annual end-of-school Popsicle Party and I have to say, it was totally brilliant. Find a few fun popsicle recipes (you can even make adults-only popsicles like mudslides and mojitos!), make them in batches and abandon all rules for the duration of the party. They’ll probably eat a dozen, but that’s part of the fun of it.
