Serena Williams is speaking out about loving herself and loving being Black.

“Personally, there’s no better time to be the color that I am,” she says in an Instagram video with her husband, venture capitalist Alexis Ohanian. “There’s no better time to be Black. I’m proud. I’ve always been proud to be who I am.”

Williams says she gets it from her parents, who taught her the power of loving herself.

“I just feel like I wouldn’t be who I am, I wouldn’t be as strong as I am, I wouldn’t be able to be as amazing as I have been so far in my career—I wouldn’t be me if I wasn’t Black.”

The couple have been in the news quite a bit since Ohanian resigned from Reddit’s Board of Directors earlier this month, recommending the company replace him with a Black person (which it did, tech entrepreneur Michael Seibel now holds the seat).

In his resignation, Ohanian described himself as “a father who needs to be able to answer his Black daughter when she asks: “What did you do?'”

Williams tweeted in response: “So proud of you Alexis. I know Olympia will be too.”

Speaking to Gayle King on CBS This Morning, Ohanian explained who Williams has pushed him to recognize his privilege.

“Look, to have that front-row seat to her, not just her greatness, but everything she has to endure, much of it that never gets reported on…” he explained, “That made the education come really quickly…especially when this is someone you love.”

Williams learned to love herself from her parents, and Olympia’s parents are making sure to continue the tradition while making the world a better place for their little girl’s generation.
