In motherhood (and life) what works for one mama may not be a fit for another, and that’s okay.

When it comes to getting babies to sleep there are a lot of options and only you know which is right for your family. Whether you choose co-sleeping, sleep training, or another technique we’re all just doing our very best to make sure our babies are happy, healthy, and getting all the rest they (and we) need.

Sleep can be a controversial subject online, and that’s why we’re glad these celebrities have gotten so real about what works best for them.

Here’s what Zoe Saldana, Hilary Duff, Chrissy Teigen and more had to share:

Zoe Saldana

Like many moms, it broke the actress’ heart to let her babies “cry it out.” In fact, she even told Parents Magazine in June 2015 that her mother-in-law came in for extra support.

“We’ve done every gentle method, and we’ve finally come to the conclusion that every parent has been telling us… you have to let them cry a little bit,” Saldana shared. “So it’s just our insides are absolutely broken, but that’s what we have to do. [My husband] Marco’s mom kind of kicked us out of the house. She was like, ‘Just leave me with these kids, go have a good time, have some popcorn.'”

Hilary Duff

When Duff’s then-3-month-old daughter, Banks, was having trouble sleeping, the Younger star enlisted the help of Sweet Dreams LA’s founder and newborn care specialist Kimberly Von Slomski.

Duff shared her experience on Instagram in February 2019, writing: “Baby whisperer/ genius/ brilliant /calm and loving Kimberly (actually baby care specialist and postpartum doula) ( @sweetdreams.la ) spent this rainy weekend with us and got our sweet girl sleeping! The poor thing was running on adrenaline… literally not sleeping unless she had a warm human to sleep on and even then 30-40 minutes max! Not realistic for our lives with going back to work and another child! Babies NEED sleep and our little girl is the happiest I have ever seen her! She slayed 11 hours last night and woke up with the biggest gummy smile I have ever seen! She has the tools to fall asleep on her own and it was so amazing (and a little emotional) to watch. I’m so proud of her and us! This was the right choice for our family! I honestly didn’t remember what good sleep felt like! Pretty delicious!”

Kourtney Kardashian

The reality TV personality has been open about how co-sleeping has been a method that works best for her family. Kardashian detailed her co-sleeping experiences in a blog post on her POOSH website, revealing that with her oldest child, Mason, co-sleeping just kind of happened on its own. When her daughter came along, she consciously decided that Penelope would also co-sleep.

By the time Kardashian’s third child came around, she opted to have him sleep in his crib from the start. All three of her experiences were different, but they were what worked for her and her family at the time.

“Some of the advantages of shared sleep for my family included a better and longer night’s sleep and more time together as a family,” she wrote. “As a working mom, if I didn’t have much time with my babies during the day, at least I knew we’d have our nights together. Penelope is now the only one who still sleeps with me sometimes, and I love when she does.”

Tori Spelling

Spelling has never shied away from sharing her reality with her Instagram followers. In January 2018, she captured a snap of her husband and then-10-month-old son getting some shut-eye on a lazy Sunday and revealed that the baby was nailing sleep training.

“Baby Beau has done amazing with his sleep training,” she wrote. “He has been in his own room, own crib, and only waking up one time a night for a little bottle for the past 4 nights,” she wrote. “We are so proud of him.”

Kristin Cavallari

Cavallari’s go-to sleep method for her kids wasn’t originally co-sleeping, but things changed amid the coronavirus pandemic and her divorce from husband Jay Cutler which both took place around the same time.

“I don’t normally let my kids sleep with me, but I’ve been rotating my kids for the last week,” she explained during an Instagram Live in May 2020. “It’s cute but those are the moments that will never be the same, we’ll never get those back. So in that sense, I’ve been trying to really enjoy that time with my kids.”

Jana Kramer

Kramer celebrated her son Jace’s 2-month birthday in January 2019 with a sweet pic and revealed she was using the baby rise sleep training method. After receiving backlash for her decision, Kramer defended herself in an IG Story saying:

“We do not let him scream and cry. I don’t even technically know if at this age babies are allowed to self soothe. When he cries, we feed him. And if it’s not time for him to eat yet … we don’t just let him scream and cry. Get off my page and stop being trolly. We’re taking very good care of our baby. He looks pretty happy to me. What do you think? I think he does.”

Chrissy Teigen

Teigen was sleep training her daughter, Luna, by the time the little one was 5 months old. “She’s a good baby,” Teigen told Ellen DeGeneres in October 2016. “We are sleep training right now and she is a good baby, because she has John’s temperament. Thank goodness.”

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher

Kutcher didn’t hesitate when discussing the sleep habits of he and Kunis’ second kid during an interview on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert podcast in February 2018, revealing the couple depends on their Snoo Smart Sleeper.

“For kid number two we got one of those Snoos. It’s an oscillating bed … It’s got a natural swaddle it has a sensor in it so the louder the kid cries, the faster it goes and puts the kid back to sleep, it’s incredible,” Kutcher shared. “I’m eternally grateful to the Snoo for that.”

Beyonce + Jay-Z

Like Kutcher and Kunis, Beyonce and Jay-Z are also fans of the Snoo.

According to to Dr. Harvey Karp, who invented the Snoo, the couple had 8 Snoos when the twins were small.

“First they were given two by a friend and then they ended up buying six more for their different houses, because they have houses all over the place,” Dr. Karp explained.

Heidi Klum

The model used the same method with all of her kids—they slept in her room for the first year. “At the moment, Lou needs me enormously. Not only because of breastfeeding but also because she needs to be close to her mother,” Klum told Gala magazine in 2009 of her now-10-year-old daughter. “She will sleep now for a year with us in our bedroom, just as her siblings did. It’s easier at night if she is hungry.”

Alanis Morissette

The singer shared her thoughts on co-sleeping in 2012. “I personally believe that the attachment stage, done well, can circumvent countless addictions later in life because many of these addictions are often a temporary attempt at feeling this sense of of connection,” she wrote in a blog post at the time.

These mamas prove there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to getting your baby to sleep.

If you are feeling really sleep deprived, don’t be afraid to ask for help. If your partner, co-parent, or a grandparent can take over while you rest, let them.

One day your baby will sleep through the night, mama, but it’s okay to ask your village for help until that day comes.
