Losing a child is unfathomably hard. Explaining the loss of a sibling to your other kids is a conversation that requires grieving parents to summon strength they likely didn’t even know they possessed.

Chrissy Teigen and her husband John Legend lost their son Jack earlier this year, about halfway through Teigen’s third pregnancy.

This week Teigen posted showed the world how her oldest child, 4-year-old Luna, is dealing with the family’s loss. In a video posted to Instagram she showed how Luna put a teddy baby next to her brother’s ashes and offered to share her food with him.

“I can’t…I don’t know, she’s amazing,” Teigen said in the video. In the caption, she wrote that she and Legend are “very open about life, death, grief, everything really.”

Teigen explained that she and Legend “try to explain things well and answer every question imaginable in a beautiful, spiritual but literal way.”

She continued: “I know this is a weird post but I just wanted to share these to always remember my incredibly empathetic little mini. life is infinitely better with her in it. I miss u, jack. we miss you a lot.”

That’s natural and normal…and so is a 4-year-old talking to a brother who isn’t here. That’s how kids deal with these things.

As Courtney Bolton, Ph.D, previously wrote for Motherly, “Loss is an inevitable part of life, and the intense sorrow that accompanies the loss of a loved one through death or separation is a normal response. These feelings can be overwhelming and confusing for children who don’t quite understand death.”

She continued: “Children are such concrete thinkers, meaning they have trouble with abstract concepts, so having a tangible object, such as a picture, item of clothing or even a game or figurine from that person can help ease the transition in their absence.”

That’s what Luna’s teddy bear is. We agree with Teigen. Luna really is amazing.
