I'm currently pregnant with twins and now that I've hit the third trimester my belly is growing at an astronomical pace every single day. To feel comfortable I've added a new step to my daily routine—one I'll admit I was not super good about before becoming a mom but one that is also much needed for me to stay comfortable throughout the day and night: moisturize my belly.
I've realized that lathering up products not only soothes the itchiness of stretching skin, but also hopefully (maybe?) will help me prevent stretch marks and retain elasticity of my skin. Sure, stretch marks are mostly genetic and 90% of pregnant people get some throughout their pregnancy, but in my experience in previous pregnancies, I've discovered that staying super hydrated, gaining weight at a steady pace and really moisturizing my skin has helped significantly when it comes to the so-called tiger stripes.
Both during the emergency C-section of my son and in my most recent ultrasound with twins, the nurses commented on how radiant and soft my skin was. So all these products are working their magic. I don't necessarily use them all on the same day - because what mom has time for that? I alternate and adjust as my schedule allows me, always making sure I use at least one in the morning and one right before bed.
Here are the products my belly has been loving lately:
Matrescence stretch mark relief refining scrub
Since I wasn't into moisturizing before, you can imagine I also wasn't into scrubbing, but this product has been my new favorite find. I use it every time I shower to help blood circulate around my belly and breasts, which in turn helps collagen to be regenerated by my body. It also has super nourishing oils that leave my skin happy, even after rinsing.
Pipette belly butter
I cannot even begin to describe how much I love Pipette's belly butter. I've gone through several tubes of it and it really works magic when it comes to the itchiness of stretching skin. Plus their products are super safe and sustainable, which makes me love the company even more.
Evereden belly mask
Whoever invented sheet belly masks is a genius. Yes, you read correctly, these are sheet masks for your belly, just like the ones we all already love to put on our faces after a long day. It does require some down time to sit and chill with the mask on so I usually do one during the weekend while my toddler naps. You can then massage the product left behind by the mask without needing to rinse.
This balm helps prevent and reduce existing stretch marks. It's vegan and plant-based, which is something I've been finding myself looking for in products as I am more conscious now of what I put in and on my body.
Body Merry stretch marks + scars butter
This body butter was recommended to me by my sister-in-law who also had twins a couple of years ago! She spoke so highly about it that I used it in both of my pregnancies and love it. It's thicker than a regular moisturizer so a little goes a long way. It also dries up quickly and is not sticky, so you can totally put on clothes after applying it without staining them at all.
Hatch belly oil
I'll admit I was not a fan of oils until I recently discovered their super properties. I apply this belly oil before going to bed and give myself a gentle belly massage to relax. It does take a little longer to dry than the other products mentioned, which is why I use it at nighttime. It makes me feel like I'm in my own personal spa!
Nine Naturals belly butter
All the ingredients used to make this rich belly butter is packed with omega fatty acids which help your skin retain elasticity and be super nourished as the rest of your body does the hard work of growing a human. The vanilla scent is delicious, which is a total bonus.
This is a classic staple in most pregnancy routines by now. I started using it pre-pregnancy to help a scar heal and it worked wonders, so from time to time I add some drops of it to my belly. I'll admit, I don't love the smell and that's why I use it sporadically since I've found other oils to be more appealing to me. But you can't go wrong with Bio-Oil and its 9,000-plus positive reviews on Amazon.
Burt's Bees Mama Bee butter
Another household staple and ideal if your jam is fragrance free products. This belly butter by Burt's Bees is 99% natural and full of shea butter, making it super nourishing for your skin.
