2020 was an impossibly challenging year—and so often, mothers beared the brunt of it. You made sacrifices in every aspect of your lives. You worried (so much worry). You cried. You cared. You loved beyond measure and you poured selflessly into everyone's cup but your own.

Well it's 2021, and it's time for that to change. We're not talking about New Year's resolutions, we're talking about reshifting the focus back to you. You spent 2020 taking care of everyone else. Now, it's your turn.

We will not ask you to change—not your body, not your look and definitely not who you are. Because we think you are pretty great just the way you are. We are not going to ask you to stray from yourself; this is simply your invitation to return to yourself—to remember just how special you are and to give yourself some of the love and magic that you so generously share with everyone else.

Call it self-care or call it self-love; ultimately it is about prioritizing you. Because you so deserve it, mama.

Here are 10 steps you can take to reset your intentions for the new year. You don't need to buy a thing, but in case you want to, we've shared our favorites.

Write down your to-do list...

balance bound planner

Research has found that writing out your to-do list helps you to reduce your stress levels while also getting more done! So, spend some time jotting it down in a way that works for you.

For the second year in a row, I am going with the Balance Bound planner. With designated areas to plan for all areas of your life—work, self, others, and home—it ensures that you're dividing your attention equally... and not burning out in the process.

Okay, now that you have written the list down...

...cross something off your to-do list.

drop the ball

So often, mothers take on too much. We do it because we love our families, but moreso because society has taught us we need to. But Tiffany Dufu is changing the dialogue (and we are so grateful). In her book Drop the Ball, she shares how she has learned to cut down her to-do list while prioritizing the things that actually matter to her. We are all for the less-is-more mentality, and highly recommend her book.

Psst: You can also listen to the Motherly Podcast episode featuring Dufu!

Create a ritual for yourself.

face mist

Can you carve out a few minutes a today to fill with a little ritual of self-care? It can be anything you want; the only rule is it needs to be more-or-less the same each day, so you can grow to rely on it. My ritual has become a kind of elaborate skin care routine, and I am obsessed with this Hydra-mist, especially in the middle of my work day. A quick spritz and a few deep breaths, and I am ready to dive back into work.

Sleeeeeeeep.

sunday citizen blanket

There is this prevailing idea in our culture that to rest to is be unproductive—and it couldn't be further from the truth. Rest IS productive. It is healing and necessary and you deserve it. The Sunday Citizen comforter is a cult favorite—when you know you know. Cuddle up and enjoy the rest your body craves, guilt free.

Listen to your body.

forks_over_knives

Take a moment and listen to your body—really listen. Is there a specific food it's craving? I mean beyond chocolate and Cheetos because yes, please. In our go-go-go society, we often forget to take a moment to check in with our bodies. But our bodies are so wise! Stop, listen and be amazed.

If your body is needing some veggies (especially after the holidays), the Forks Over Knives book is a great place to start. It's full of delicious and extremely nutrient-dense recipes, all based entirely on plants.

Hydrate.

well water bottle

According to one study, 75% of adults don't drink enough water. Yikes! Let's change that by making sure we get eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. Or, make it easy and invest in an awesome water bottle, like this one from Welly (that also has a tea infuser). So drink up, and notice how much better you feel.

Make that appointment you've been putting off.

perpetual calendar

Honesty time (without an ounce of judgment, promise). When was the last time you got a pap smear? How about a breast exam? And the dentist? Taking care of ourselves so often falls to the bottom of our list, but mama, do you have any idea how important you are? Commit to taking care of yourself. Find a perpetual calendar (or use your phone) and keep track of the dates when you will get your routine screening, tests, vaccines and more. (And then, remember to actually go.)

Psst: Start this resolution off with a trip to your general practitioner. Recommendations vary per person, and they can help you determine when you need to be seen.

Create a mini sanctuary in your home.

candle

Create a tiny sanctuary for yourself at home—a place where you can go regularly to get a break (for your mind, body and soul). It could be as elaborate as an entire room (with a door!) that you have converted into a home office, or as simple as a small corner that's free of toys and has your favorite piece of artwork hanging, or as comfy as your bed. Anything goes (because it's your sanctuary).

I have recently fallen in love with the candles from Apothepure—they'd make a great addition to your little sanctuary.

Clean out your bag.

diaper bag

A wise woman once said, "Why is there peanut butter all over my wallet and where in the world are my keys?" She was a mom, which meant her bag was a mess. While we can all identify with the messy bag, we also all know how good it feels to clean it out! So start the year fresh with a clean and organized bag.

If you are in need of a new bag, we love the Vegan Kinney! It's chic enough to wear everywhere, but still has all the organization you need from a diaper bag. Plus, it's a backpack which means you can be hands-free.

$178

Celebrate yourself.

bracelet

Celebrate yourself. Get out a piece of paper. Now get a pen. Now write three things you are proud of. No really, do it. Go ahead, we'll wait… because mama, you are so deserving of praise and celebration.

If you a little help remembering how amazing you really are, we love the Sontakey oath bracelets to remind you every single day.

$35

We independently select and share the products we love—and may receive a commission if you choose to buy. You've got this.
