Tammy Duckworth believes #familiesbelongtogether—and brought her baby to the protest, too

Mothers across America are demanding the government keep immigrant families together, and Senator Tammy Duckworth, a new mama herself, is no exception. Duckworth joined protestors in a Capitol Hill Senate building this week to oppose the separation of immigrant families, and thousands of other mothers will be joining in protests in other cities come Saturday.

Families Belong Together organized the marches before President Trump signed an executive order to keep families from being separated at the border, but many say the protests are just as necessary now as they were before the order was signed, as the Trump administration struggles to “comply with a federal judge’s order requiring that thousands of migrant children who were forcibly separated from their parents be reunited within 30 days,” as the Associated Press reports.

“I’m lucky to be the mom of 2 incredible little girls & I can’t even begin to imagine being torn away from them or the pain and fear they would feel if they were ripped from my arms,” Duckworth tweeted as she protested, calling on President Trump, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Health and Human Services to immediately reunite immigrant parents and children who’ve been detained separately.

As “the daughter of an immigrant”, as she points out on her website, Duckworth is an advocate for humane and fair immigration reform. She spoke with demonstrators who wrapped themselves in silver emergency blankets similar to those used by child detainees in detention centers.

“I wanted to show my support for the folks here today,” Duckworth explained to CNN at the event. “I could only imagine what it would be like to have my daughter — my breastfeeding child — ripped away from me the way some of these other moms’ babies have been.”

Duckworth’s daughter Maile was famously the first baby to enter the Senate floor, and she certainly won’t be the last baby to attend a protest to oppose the separation of immigrant families. Tens of thousands of people (some wearing babies, no doubt) are expected to attend the Families Belong Together protests across the country on Saturday.
