We all need a mom friend like Katy Perry.

Since giving birth to daughter Daisy Dove back in August, the singer continues to delight us with her total honesty when it comes to becoming a mom.

In a new interview on Live with Kelly and Ryan, Perry opened up about returning to work just five weeks after giving birth to Daisy, who she shares with fiancé Orlando Bloom.

“I did start filming American Idol Season 4 after I’d given birth, five weeks later,” she said. “And I didn’t plan that. But it was like, ‘Oh, my God!'”

She continued, “It was so intense, you know? Giving birth, and then going back to work and breastfeeding, and going like–holy crap! This is what women do? Oh my God!”

Host Kelly Ripa agreed, saying, “It’s kinda amazing. It’s like you can’t believe what your body is capable of, right?”

“Women are the most powerful beings on the planet,” Perry eagerly agreed.

A little louder for the people in the back, Katy.

Perry’s American Idol costar, Luke Bryan, says it’s “amazing” watching her grow as a parent.

“It’s just really amazing being there with Katy and watching her [be a mom],” Bryan told People this week. “Sometimes in the breaks, she’ll FaceTime Orlando [Bloom] and little Daisy Dove. And so, I’ll get to say, ‘Hey.’ But just watching Katy embrace being a mother is a very beautiful thing to watch. I never had a doubt she would be a tremendous mother.”

“She’d come on set; she would’ve been up nursing all night,” he added. “Katy’s in the full swing of things with nursing, so we’ve had to work around her schedule. But she’s been a trouper and showing up and working like she always does. I know she’s doing it on minimal sleep, so she’s a rockstar.”

We love how supportive Bryan is of Perry’s journey as a new mom. We all need coworkers who understand that the sleepless nights and round-the-clock nursing sessions are work.

What we appreciate even more, though, is Katy’s honesty about how hard it can be to juggle work with becoming a new mom.

Why? Because it doesn’t matter whether you choose to stay home with your baby or go back to work—parenting is hard. Even if you have a great birth experience and recovery, even if your baby sleeps soundly through the night from birth—parenting is hard.

Too often, we only share the good parts of being a parent. And there are so many good parts!

But when we only share the positives, we might make a new mom who’s in the thick of it feel like she’s doing something wrong.

If you identify with that, we’re speaking straight to you here: you’re not doing anything wrong. You are not alone. Sometimes, it’s hard. We just don’t talk about it enough.

We’re grateful that as Perry continues to share more of her life as Daisy’s mom, she also keeps it real.
