Meghan Markle has been through so much in the past three years. She’s gotten engaged, married and become a mom all while being one of the most scrutinized people in the world. She’s been bullied and mocked in the press while making incredibly brave moves by challenging the status quo and breaking barriers. And she did it as a brand new mom.

And now, during a recent interview with Fortune‘s Emma Hinchliffe at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Next Gen Summit, Markle is telling the world that motherhood made her brave.

When asked if motherhood has made her more courageous or cautious she told Hinchliffe: “My gut is that it makes you more courageous…It makes you so concerned for the world they [your children] are going to inherit. At the same time, I am cautious of putting my family at risk by [saying] certain things—I try to be very clear with what I say, and not make it controversial.”

“I wouldn’t be able to feel proud of myself as a mom if I didn’t know that I wasn’t doing my part to make it a better place for him,” Markle said.

The Duchess is encouraging Americans to vote in the upcoming presidential election, a statement that should not be controversial but is perceived as such by some who prefer royals stay out of politics.

But this election is important, and so, says the Duchess, is getting a handle on social media. “Something, algorithmically, is creating this obsession,” she explained, suggesting that while moms don’t have to get off social media entirely like she did, making boundaries for yourself is a good first step.

In 2020, let’s get courageous with our politics and careful with our online behavior. After all, Archie is not the only child who will inherit this world.
