We enter a lot of information into the pregnancy and fertility apps on our phones. Some of this information is incredibly personal, the kind of information that we wouldn't want anyone, especially our employers, to have access to.

But as the Washington Post revealed recently, Ovia, a popular brand of pregnancy, parenting and fertility apps, offers a version of its apps that employers can offer as an employee health benefit, and that means employers are getting access to a lot of very personal data.

The data is anonymous, so employers shouldn't be able to use it to target a specific employee (although research suggests it's not impossible to identify people via anonymized data), but they certainly are using it to track their workforces.

Companies hope encouraging the use of Ovia will help them save on employee medical costs and get mothers back to work quickly by helping them stay healthier. According to the Post, this is part of Ovia's sales pitch to companies.

In a statement to Motherly, a spokesperson for Ovia explains the company works "with a number of employers to provide them with our maternity and family benefits solution that helps women grow their families and their careers. If an employer offers our maternity and family benefits, an employer will alert employees about this benefit. If an employee chooses to sign up for these benefits, they will receive on-demand coaching, personalized guidance and information, and tools to improve their health. Employers receive broad, population-level statistics on app usage such as number of enrollments, number of active users, and users per session."

The statement continues: "The vast majority of our users are on our free to download consumer apps. On the consumer apps, activity in the app is not -- and has never been -- shared with employers."

From the employer's perspective, pregnancy can be a big expense for companies funding employee health insurance, so in theory, Ovia is offered to workers in the hopes that by tracking their pregnancies women will stay healthier and cost the companies less.

But experts worry the data could be used to discriminate against women, and caution against volunteering so much intimate data.

"The fact that women's pregnancies are being tracked that closely by employers is very disturbing," Deborah C. Peel, founder of the Texas nonprofit Patient Privacy Rights, tells The Post. "There's so much discrimination against mothers and families in the workplace, and they can't trust their employer to have their best interests at heart."

The Washington Post report raised concerns about how pregnancy data may be used by employers, but even if your pregnancy app data isn't going to your employer, you may want to think about where your information is ending up, why the app exists at all—and certainly why it is free to download. When it comes to the digital world if we're not paying for something ourselves, that usually means our data is the product.

Back in 2016 Peel raised these concerns in another interview with the Post, noting that "This kind of information for women is very intimate," and that "The implications are really huge: There are absolutely no laws that protects that information from being sold, disclosed, or traded — for any purpose, be it marketing or research."

So maybe, before logging our sex lives, our periods and our pregnancies, we need to think more about where that info is going.

Joana Varon is the founder of Coding Rights, a Brazil­-based women-­run organization that works to "expose and redress the power imbalances built into technology". Along with Natasha Felizi and others, Varon has researched and reviewed menstrual-tracking apps and our relationship with them.

Her team concluded that most of these apps "rely on the production and analysis of data for financial sustainability." In other words: Tracking our periods has become another form of unpaid work for women. We do the work of putting in our data, and the companies use our intimate information to make money and inform marketing strategies.

Brianna Bell, a millennial mother who works as a freelance writer wasn't worried about an employer tracking her data, as she was using the consumer version of Ovia's pregnancy and parenting apps for 18 months. But she did not realize that the company behind these apps could sell her data. "It feels like a very big breach of privacy," she tells Glamour. "It makes me feel uncomfortable, and it feels like this company has preyed on women who are in the most exciting and vulnerable time of their life."

The controversy around Ovia is highlighting an important issue for our generation. The question now is, how much of our information do we want to trade for convenience?

Periods, fertility and pregnancy symptoms can all be tracked offline, and app makers would do well to center women as the customers for apps like these, rather than the product.

Finding out that you are having multiples is always a surprise, but finding out that you're in labor with triplets when you didn't even know you were pregnant, well that's the mother of all surprises.

It happened to Dannette Glitz of South Dakota on August 10. The Associated Press reports she had no idea she was pregnant and thought the pain she was experiencing was kidney stones.

"I never felt movement, I never got morning sickness, nothing!" Glitz explains in a social media post.

"Well this was a huge shock"

When Glitz posted photos of her triplets to her Facebook page last week one of her friends was confused. "What? You really had triplets?" they asked.

Glitz (who has two older children) started getting pain in her back and sides in the days before the birth, but it felt like the kidney stones she had previously experienced so she brushed it off. Eventually, she was in so much pain all she could do was lay in bed and cry.

"It hurt to move and even breath[e]," she wrote, explaining that she decided to go to an Urgent Care clinic, "thinking I'm going to have to have surgery to break the stones up."

A pregnancy test at Urgent Care revealed Glitz was pregnant—that was the first surprise. The second surprise happened when a heart monitor revealed the possibility of twins.

'I need another blanket, there's a third'

Glitz was transferred to a regional hospital in Spearfish, South Dakota. "And in about 2 hours they confirmed twins as there was 2 heart beats," she writes.

Glitz was 34 weeks along and four centimeters dilated. She was transferred again, rushed by ambulance to the hospital in Rapid City and prepped for a C-section. When the C-section was happening she heard the doctor announce that Baby A was a boy and Baby B was a girl.

"Then [the doctor] yells 'I need another blanket, there's a third' ....I ended up having triplets, 1 boy [and] 2 girls," Glitz writes.

Glitz and her husband Austin named their surprise children Blaze, Gypsy and Nikki and each of the trio weighed about 4 pounds at birth. Because the couple's older children are school-aged, they didn't have any baby stuff at home. Friends quickly rallied, raising over $2,000 via a Facebook fundraiser to help the family with unexpected expenses.

A family of seven 

The family is getting used to their new normal and is so thankful for the community support and donations. "It's amazing in a small town how many people will come together for stuff that's not expected," Glitz told KOTA TV.

Her oldest, 10-year-old Ronnie, is pretty happy about a trio of siblings showing up suddenly.

"One time I seen a shooting star and I wished for a baby brother, and I wished for like two sisters for my little sister because she always wanted a little sister, I knew this day was always going to come," Ronnie told TV reporters.

Ronnie may not have been surprised, but everyone else in this story certainly was.

Orange Is the New Black star Danielle Brooks is pregnant and frustrated. The actress took to Instagram this week to lament the lack of plus-sized options for pregnant people.

"It's so hard to find some clothes to wear today....Although I get to pregnant I still can't find no clothes. It's so hard to find some clothes when you're pregnant," she sings in a lighthearted yet serious video.

"It's so hard to find cute plus size maternity fashion while pregnant, but ima push through," she captioned the clip.

Brooks has been talking a lot this week about the issues people who wear plus size clothing face not just when trying to find clothes but in simply moving through a world that does not support them.

"I feel like the world has built these invisible bullets to bully us in telling us who we're supposed to be and what we're supposed to look like. And I've always had this desire to prove people wrong—to say that this body that I'm in is enough," she told SHAPE (she's on the new cover).

"Now that I'm about to be a mother, it means even more—to make sure that this human being I'm going to bring into the world knows that they are enough," she said.

Can pregnancy be contagious among friends? Science says yes, and so do some staff at a hospital in Maine where nine nurses from the Labor & Delivery Unit were all expecting at the same time, and now they are all mamas.

About 5 months ago, after one of the nurses posted a photo of 8 of the 9 mamas-to-be the sweet pic quickly went viral.

Soon local news stations picked up the story of the baby boom on the L&D unit at Maine Medical Center.



"It's really nice coming to work and seeing other people who are just as pregnant and watching their bellies pop and just talking about these experiences that we are going through together," one of the nurses, Amanda Spear, told WMTW.

"I feel like every other day we would come into work and it would be like, 'someone else is pregnant,'" Spear told NBC.

Another of the nurses, Erin Grenier, said that with every pregnancy announcement the staff got more and more excited for each other.

Nurse Brittney Verville couldn't believe the photo she posted to Facebook before resting up for the night shift got thousands of likes and shares. "When we woke up we're like, 'oh my gosh I think we're viral,'" she told NBC.

Now, the mamas are going viral again, as a picture of the babies is blowing up, even making it to CNN.

The youngest is 3 weeks old and the oldest is 3½ months. The mamas are already getting them together for playdates. The photographer who snapped the viral pic, Carly Murray, told CNN she hopes one say these kiddos understand how important the work their mamas do is.

In the last couple of years Prince Harry has had more eyes on him than ever before, and the beaming new dad has been showing the world that red hair can look really good.

While Prince Harry has taken some ribbing for his hair over the years, it's pretty clear that the former Meghan Markle loves him dearly (red hair and all) and everyone is wondering if baby Archie will be a ginger, too. It looks like Harry's genes are pretty strong.

Several media outlets are reporting that baby Archie appears to have reddish hair, but only time will truly tell if that peach fuzz turns into real read hair.

Is baby Archie really a redhead? 

Photographs of baby Archie seem to suggest his hair does have a reddish hue, and it is totally possible for a couple to have a redheaded baby even if one of them isn't a ginger.

"Even when we can't always see red hair, many people still carry the genes," says Professor Mark Elgar, an evolutionary biologist from the University of Melbourne.

"Recessive genes can stay hidden for a long time, which is why brown-eyed parents can have blue eyed child, just as brown-haired parents can have a redheaded baby," says Professor Elgar.

According to Elgar, this is why reports of redheads with blue eyes (like Prince Harry) "going extinct" are exaggerated. "It does not look like the traits will disappear due to dilution of either the redhead or the blue-eyed genes from the human population."

The ginger genes 

So, if the Duchess has the gene for red hair, baby Archie may share Prince Harry's hair hue. According to USA Today, John H. McDonald, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Delaware put the chances of a redheaded baby for the couple at about 10%.

In fact, there's a chance that any baby—even those with two non-redhead parents—can be a redhead. Recessive genes can pop up seemingly out of nowhere, surprising parents.

While the internet is getting very excited about the possibility that baby Archie is a ginger, we know no matter what his hair eventually looks like (he dies;t have a lot of it right now) his mama will love him as much as she loves his father.
