A massive recall that saw 6.5 million pounds of ground beef recalled in October has now been expanded. Now more than 12 million pounds of ground beef is being recalled due to possible salmonella contamination, and the United States Department of Agricultures ‘s Food Safety and Inspection Service is concerned that some of this beef is in consumers’ freezers .

So check your freezer for ground beef products packaged between July 26, 2018 to Sept. 7, 2018.

Arizona-based supplier JBS Tolleson Inc provided “raw, non-intact beef items, including ground beef,” to various retailers across the country. The meat was sold under the brand names Kroger, Cedar River Farms Natural Beef, Comnor Perfect Choice, Gourmet Burger, Grass Run Farms Natural Beef, JBS Generic, Showcase (a Walmart brand), and Laura’s Lean. You can see the initial lists of brands on the USDA’s website, as well as the list of brands that were recently added to the recall . The ground beef was packaged on dates from July 26, 2018 to Sept. 7, 2018. The USDA mark of inspection on the packaging lists the establishment number as “EST. 267”
According to the CDC (as of November 15) , 246 people in at least 25 states, have become sick during this salmonella outbreak. “An additional 16 case-patients have provided receipts or shopper card numbers for the product traceback investigations,” the Food Safety and Inspection Service notes , adding that three of those 16 cases were linked to JBS Tolleson products that were not part of the original recall. According to the FSIS, salmonellosis is one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses, but infants and those with compromised immune systems are more at risk for more severe complications. Usually, people who are sick with salmonellosis experience symptoms (diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever) within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food, and the illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, according to FSIS.
