Lysol products have been selling out in grocery stores for months, but the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved two of the company’s products for use against the coronavirus.

Lysol Disinfectant Spray and Lysol Disinfectant Max Cover Mist can kill the virus in two minutes, says the EPA, which reviews products in this category before the makers can legally claim their product kills a particular virus.

Way back in March (it feels like a million years ago now) the EPA released a list of household cleaners that were very likely effective against coronavirus, but because the virus was so new, they didn’t know for sure as testing had been limited. They were making the list based on how products killed similar viruses.

Now they can say for certain that Lysol Disinfectant Spray and Lysol Disinfectant Max Cover Mist work on the coronavirus specifically.

Where can I buy Lysol right now?

The problem now is finding these Lysol products, as they are hard to keep in stock during the pandemic. Even Amazon is sold out. Walmart’s website lists Lysol Disinfectant Max Cover Mist as being out of stock online, but Lysol Disinfectant Spray is available in-store only. Call your local Walmart to check if they have any.

Target, Walgreens and Dollar General also usually stock these products, but may not always have it in stock right now. Try checking out places like Home Depot or Lowe’s, as they usually have it in stock, depending on where you live. Smaller, independent grocers or hardware stores in your area may have limited numbers of Lysol products. Call ahead and ask before visiting the store.

What should I buy if Lysol is sold out?

If Lysol isn’t available, you can try any of the products previously recommended by the EPA (that have proven effective in killing similar viruses).

Fantastik All-Purpose Cleaner, Arm & Hammer Essentials Disinfecting Wipes, Windex Disinfectant Cleaner and Clorox Multi Surface Cleaner + Bleach are all on the list and can be easier to find in stores.

If you’ve been missing your Clorox wipes you’re not alone, mama, but you may need to find a substitute because the company says the wipes will still be hard to find

As ABC News reports, Clorox company president Linda Rendle stated on an earnings call that the coveted wipes will be in short supply for some time.

“Given the fact cold and flu (season) sits in the middle of the (fiscal) year, and we expect the pandemic to be with us for the entirety of the year, it will take the full year to get up to the supply levels that we need to be at,” Rendle said.

Like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Lysol sprays, Clorox products have been a hot commodity through the pandemic.

Benno Dorer, Clorox CEO, told Reuters “That entire supply chain is stressed… We feel like it’s probably going to take until 2021 before we’re able to meet all the demand that we have.”

He continues: “Disinfecting wipes, which are the hottest commodity in the business right now, will probably take longer because it’s a very complex supply chain to make them,” Dorer said. Many wipes are made from polyester spunlace, a material currently in short supply as it is also used to make personal protective equipment like masks, medical gowns and medical wipes.”

Now may be the time to switch to a more sustainable cleaning method if you’re trying to wean yourself off wipes and paper towels.
