For a lot of parents, Goldfish crackers are always on the shopping list (and in the couch cushions, the car, and anywhere else they’re not supposed to be). The crunchy little fish are beloved by many toddlers, but some varieties are being recalled due to the same supply chain issue that saw Ritz Bits recalled this week.

In a statement posted on its website, Pepperidge Farm, the maker of Goldfish crackers, explained the company has been notified by a whey powder supplier that the ingredient (which is used in a seasoning applied to four varieties of Goldfish) is being recalled due to the potential presence of Salmonella.

“Pepperidge Farm initiated an investigation and, out of an abundance of caution, is voluntarily recalling four varieties of Goldfish crackers,” the notice states.

The original Goldfish are not being recalled but the Goldfish Baked with Whole Grain Xtra Cheddar, Goldfish Mix Xtra Cheddar + Pretzel, as well as the Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheddar and Flavor Blasted Sour Cream & Onion varieties are impacted in the United States. (In Canada, only the Flavour Blasted Xtreme Cheddar variety is being recalled).

Salmonella causes about 1.2 million illnesses in the United States every year, according to the CDC. For most people, the illness (diarrhea, fever and cramps for about a week) doesn’t require treatment, but about 23,000 people are hospitalized every year, and 450 cases are fatal. Small children are among those most at risk, with kids under five having higher rates of Salmonella infection than any other age group.

No one has become sick from eating the Goldfish flavors impacted by the recall, but Peppridge Farms wants to make sure it stays that way and is advising people not to eat the crackers, but to instead throw them away, return them to the store for a refund, use this online form to be reimbursed.
