A husband’s guide to Mother’s Day: 10 steps to success

2. Let her sleep in ?

Unless your wife’s idea of a good time is getting up for a 6 am run, (sidenote: she’s our hero) Mother’s Day means “I’ve got the kids this morning.”

This is non-negotiable.

Don’t wake her up on Sunday morning to say, “Hey, I’m getting up with the kids now.” That doesn’t count as letting her sleep in. No—just let. her. sleep. and slip out of the room as quietly as possible in the morning.

Uninterrupted rest is the Holy Grail for moms.

Every time a mom sleeps through the night, an angel gets his wings. ?

So get her Mother’s Day off on the right foot by letting her sleep like a college kid.

And when mama finally rolls down the stairs at 10 am, be sure to have her coffee ready. ☕️

3. Breakfast goals ?

Whether in bed, in the kitchen, at Starbucks or at her favorite brunch spot, a thoughtful breakfast is a must on Mother’s Day.

Let the kids “help”—or don’t and show off your sexy soufflé skills. But either way, she is absolutely NOT ALLOWED to clean up.

4. Power to the ritual

A post shared by Hannah (@hannaahjean) on

Some faith traditions bless moms on Mother’s Day. Other families have special traditions they bring out every year. Whether it’s a mother’s blessing or a special roses each year, pointing to the bigger picture can bring deeper meaning to her day.

5. Do some digital digging + sleuth for what she really wants

A post shared by Motherly (@mother.ly) on

Check out her Pinterest boards to get a sense of what products, recipes or activity ideas have already caught her eye. You can’t fail with a new lipstick, workout outfit or home decor item that she’s already added to her board. (Meaning: She already loves it.) ?

Bonus points: She’ll be impressed with how incredibly thoughtful you are. So it’s kind of a win-win.

7. Involve family + friends

To really make her swoon, team up with her best friend’s husband to coordinate an afternoon where they can get out together. Because, as much as she loves you, do either of you really want to have a discussion about the latest episode of Scandal?

Or, if family is nearby, do the legwork on getting together for a meal—and then allow her to enjoy every course from the appetizer to dessert while you wrangle the kids.

8. Non-stop affection

A post shared by Motherly (@mother.ly) on

A drooly little baby kiss. A toddler hug. A pat on the butt from her husband. Don’t just tell mama that you love her, show her with a day full of affection. You are her people, and she wants all the kisses and hugs.

11. Bonus: Keep the mother love coming

Don’t let Mother’s Day be the only time of the year you stop to give mama attention + affection.

Motherhood is an endless, often thankless job. (It’s also an awesome and essential one.) So recognizing her amazingness on the daily can go a long way—whether in words, email or text.

You’ve got this.

Mother’s Day can be a tricky holiday for supportive partners to get right. Does mama want a break—or a day of family bonding? (Hint: A little bit of both.)

Motherly’s editors bring you 10 steps to Mother’s Day success so you can shower the mother in your life with nothing but love—

1. Ask her what her best Mother’s Day” looks like

A post shared by Motherly (@mother.ly) on

Ask mama if she wants to be surprised by the Mother’s Day’s events, or if she wants to do something specific.

If she wants to be surprised: Ask yourself what happiness and relaxation looks like for your woman. DO NOT bring her to the mall if she loves her alone time. Do not leave her alone if she loves brunch with her besties. Ask yourself when she feels truly loved and happy and cared for. DO THAT.

If she has something specific in mind: This does NOT mean she has to plan her own Mother’s Day. There is an important distinction between having an idea of what she wants to do, and having to plan it. Give her a break from the 24/7 logistics operation and plan all of the details for her.

6. Or try the old faithfuls

A post shared by Motherly (@mother.ly) on

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with relying on traditional symbols of your love and devotion if you’re otherwise stumped on what gift to give.

Flowers—She’ll especially adore a modern arrangement from a place like BloomThat. (Psst, BloomThat is offering Motherly readers 15% off orders, use code MOTHERLY15. Expires 5/15)

Jewelry—Go for something sentimental rather than flashy. Something featuring gems that represent your children’s birthstones is always a mama-fave.

Spa day—Don’t just get her the gift card, but actually arrange the specific time for her to take advantage of it!

Breakfast in bed—No need to go overboard. In fact, something that can be whipped together the minute you hear her stirring in the bedroom is great—no need to wake mama up just because the pancakes are hot!

10. Tell her—in words and actions —just how amazing she is

A post shared by Motherly (@mother.ly) on

Whether you’re known for your classic love letters or the thought of writing makes you break out in a sweat, take one for the team and put something—anything—down on paper about how wonderful she is. As a prompt: What are three reasons you love her more now than ever before?

Is that still not your thing? Print off and frame a favorite picture of you two together and tell her why you still feel all ? when you see it. Because we all know mama’s still got it going on!

9. Then give her some deliberate alone time

Some of the sweetest words to a mama’s ears are, “Honey, I’m taking the kids down to the park for an hour!” She loves you. She loves them. But she forgets what it’s like to casually linger around a quiet house at 3 o’clock in the afternoon.

Behind every amazing Mother’s Day is some alone time for mama. Make it happen.

These budget-friendly products really make a splash.

With babies and toddlers, bath time is about so much more than washing off: It's an opportunity for fun, sensory play and sweet bonding moments—with the added benefit of a cuddly, clean baby afterward.

Because bathing your baby is part business, part playtime, you're going to want products that can help with both of those activities. After countless bath times, here are the products that our editors think really make a splash. (Better yet, each item is less than $20!)

When your little one is splish-splashing in the bath, help keep them from also sliding around with a soft, anti-slip bath mat. With strong suction cups to keep it in place and extra cushion to make bath time even more comfortable for your little one, this is an essential in our books.

Comforts Baby Lotion

Comforts baby lotion

For most of us, the bath time ritual continues when your baby is out of the tub when you want to moisturize their freshly cleaned skin. We look for lotions that are hypoallergenic, nourishing and designed to protect their skin.

The First Years Stack Up Cups

When it comes to bath toys, nothing beats the classic set of stackable cups: Sort them by size, practice pouring water, pile them high—your little one will have fun with these every single bath time.

Comforts Baby Oil

For dry skin that needs a little extra TLC, our team loves Comforts' fast-absorbing baby oil aloe vera and vitamin E. Pro tip: When applied right after drying off your baby, the absorption is even more effective.

KidCo Bath Toy Organizer

9 products that will help baby sleep better (and longer!)

For many parents, attempting naps and bedtime can seem like a never-ending cycle of rocking, shushing and hoping for some kind of magic sleep solution.

How do I get my baby to sleep? This is one of the most commonly asked questions among new parents, and it makes sense, given that babies are born with their days and nights mixed up. For many parents, attempting naps and bedtime can seem like a never-ending cycle of rocking, shushing and hoping for some kind of magic sleep solution.

And while that might not exist (yet), we have found some of the best products out there that can help baby fall asleep faster and for longer durations. Because when baby is sleeping, so are you!

Dreamland Baby weighted sleep sack and swaddle

Designed by a mama, parents swear by this weighted sleep sack. It mimics your hug to give your baby security and comfort that helps them get to sleep faster and stay asleep longer. The detachable swaddle wing makes it easy to transition as they grow.

It's also super easy to get on and off, and includes a bottom-up zipper for late night changes, so you don't have to wake your baby in the process.

Yogasleep Hushh portable sound machine

Yogasleep hushh sound machine

With three soothing options, this is a perfect solution to help your baby settle when naps are on the go and during travel! I love how compact this noise machine is and that it can run all night with one charge.

$30

Bebe au Lait muslin crib sheets

Burt's Bees Organic Crib Sheets

With a variety of print options to choose from, these breathable sheets are *so* soft and smooth, even through multiple washes. The luxury fabric keeps little ones warm without overheating—a formula that helps ensure more sleep for everyone.

$32

The Simple Folk perfect pajamas

The Simple Folk perfect pajamas

You know what's going to help baby have their best sleep ever? Some quality, super soft pajamas. The timeless (and aptly named!) Perfect Pajama from The Simple Folk are some of our favorites. They last forever and they're made from organic pima cotton that is safe on baby's precious skin. They come in a wide range of sizes so siblings can match and feature fold-over hand covers on sizes up to 12 months.

$37

The Snoo bassinet

Snoo

Designed by expert pediatrician and sleep guru Dr. Harvey Karp, the Snoo bassinet gently rocks your baby to sleep while snuggled up in the built-in swaddle. Not only does it come with sensors that adjust the white noise and movement based on your baby's needs, there is also an app that allows you to adjust the settings directly from your phone.

While this item is a bit on the expensive side, there is now an option to rent for $3.50 a day, which is a total game changer!

$1295

Hatch Baby Rest sound machine + nightlight

best baby sound machine

The Hatch Baby Rest is a dual sound machine and nightlight that will grow with your family. Many parents use this product with their infants as a white-noise machine and then as a "time to rise" solution for toddlers.

The thing I love most about this product is that the light it gives off isn't too bright, and you can even select different color preferences; giving your toddler choices at bedtime.

$59.99

Crane humidifier

Crane Humidifier

The only thing worse than a sick baby is a baby who is sick and not sleeping well. The Crane humidifier helps take care of this by relieving congestion and helping your baby breathe better while sleeping.

Personally, I think the adorable design options alone are enough of a reason to purchase this product, and your child will love watching steam come out of the elephant's trunk!

$46.99

Naturepedic organic crib mattress

Naturpedic Lightweight Organic Mattress

In the first few months of life, babies can spend up to 17 hours a day sleeping, so choosing a mattress that is safe (read: no chemicals!) and comfortable is incredibly important.

Naturepedic uses allergen-friendly and waterproof materials with babies and children in mind, making them easy to clean and giving you peace of mind.

$259.00

Happiest Baby sleepea 5-second swaddle

best baby swaddle

There are baby swaddles and then there is Sleepea. Similar to the brand's swaddle that is built into the Snoo, the Sleepea is magic for multiple reasons. First, it's got mesh panels ensuring baby never overheats. Second, the zipper zips from the top or the bottom, so you can change the baby's diaper in the middle of the night without ever waking them. Third, it's hip safe. Fourth, the patterns are SO cute. And fifth, the interior swaddle wrap that keeps baby's ams down has a "quiet" velcro that won't wake baby if you need to readjust while they're asleep.

Becoming a mother has been life-changing. It's been hard, tiring, gratifying, beautiful, challenging, scary and a thousand other things that only a parent would ever understand.

It is these life-changing experiences that have inspired me to draw my everyday life as a stay at home mom. Whether it's the mundane tasks like doing laundry or the exciting moments of James', my baby boy's, first steps, I want to put it down on paper so that I can better cherish these fleeting moments that are often overlooked.

Being a stay-at-home-mom can be incredibly lonely. I like to think that by drawing life's simple moments, I can connect with other mothers and help them feel less alone. By doing this, I feel less alone, too. It's a win-win situation and I have been able to connect with many lovely parents and fellow parent-illustrators through my Instagram account.
