Chrissy Teigen is sharing the touching way she and her family are remembering baby Jack—the little boy she lost after pregnancy complications last year.

Teigen appears on the cover of People magazine’s Beautiful issue this week with kids Luna and Miles at her side, and shared emotional details about the family’s love and grief for baby Jack. She revealed that she and husband John Legend are building a new home that will feature an indoor tree dedicated to their baby boy.

“The whole reason why I wanted it was so Jack’s ashes could be in that soil and he could be with us all the time and grow through the beautiful leaves on this tree, and always be a part of us,” she said. “Because… he wasn’t just a moment in time. He was real and he was real to us and we loved him.”

Teigen explained that it’s part of a Thai tradition to be open about death and loved ones who have passed. “We always embrace the ones that we’ve lost and they’re never, ever gone. They’re constantly around us,” she said.

The tree isn’t the only way she’s honored Jack. Teigen revealed a new tattoo of her little boy’s name on her arm in the weeks following his loss, matching with the tattoos she’s gotten that feature John, Luna, and Miles’s names.

Teigen’s surprise third pregnancy was well-documented on her social media pages, and she was just as open with fans about her anguish and pain when Jack didn’t survive—inspiring so many others who have experienced miscarriage, pregnancy loss, and child loss. So often those who go through a loss end up suffering in silence, and we’re glad that Teigen decided to help break that taboo. “I’ve learned how strong physically and mentally a body can be. I’ve learned how strong I am,” she said.

Teigen added that the past year has been a “roller coaster for everybody in the world,” but that she’s felt supported. “I feel every piece of love from everybody around the world,” she said.

We’re so happy that Teigen has been able to feel some healing after losing Jack—even though we know that the pain won’t ever fully go away.
