When Halsey revealed her pregnancy on Instagram earlier this year, the singer was inundated with congratulations and well wishes from fans. But unfortunately, the baby news also came with some unwanted speculation about how and why she’d conceived. Now Halsey’s hitting back at those who questioned the details of her pregnancy—and offering a reminder on why it’s absolutely no one’s business.

The 26-year-old took to Instagram with a pointed question for her followers: “Why is it ok to speculate and pass judgment about fertility?” she asked.

We’re happy to answer: it is most definitely not OK, famous or not.

“My pregnancy was 100% planned, and I tried very hard for this bb,” she continued. “But I would be just as happy even if it were another way.”

Female celebrities are so often the subject of gross gossip, and it seems to go into overdrive when it comes to pregnancy. But the prying for private details from Halsey is even more tasteless when you consider that the “Without Me” singer has been open about her fertility struggles in the past.

Motherhood is something Halsey has been dreaming of for years, and it’s clear that the journey hasn’t been easy for her. In a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone, she shared the heartbreaking details of a miscarriage that led her to a big revelation.

“I want to be a mom more than I want to be a pop star. More than I want to be anything in the world,” she told the magazine.

But as she wrote in the liner notes of her second album, Manic, she didn’t know if it was a dream she could ever actually achieve. “For a long time, I didn’t think that having a family was something I was going to be able to do, and it’s very, very important to me.”

Another reason why having a family may have seemed out of reach for the singer? A battle with endometriosis. Back in January, she shared a candid close-up of her baby bump that also showed off the scars she received from her endometriosis surgery. The painful condition can make it harder to get pregnant, according to the Mayo Clinic. That diagnosis may have made the odds harder for Halsey to overcome on the way to a healthy pregnancy.

But now that she’s living out her dream, fame or not, she deserves the same peace, privacy, and respect as any other mom.
