The Mayo Clinic describes endometriosis as a painful disorder where tissue that normally grows inside of the uterus, or endometrium, actually grows outside of the uterus. Endometriosis can cause severe pain and fertility issues.
In recent years, Halsey has opened up about her struggles with the condition.
She was diagnosed in 2015 following a miscarriage during a live concert.
"And before I could really figure out what that meant to me and what that meant for my future, for my career, for my life, for my relationship, the next thing I knew I was on stage miscarrying in the middle of my concert," she said in an interview on The Doctors, where she also revealed that she underwent surgery to treat her endometriosis.
The 'Closer' singer also wrote about her fertility struggles in the liner notes of her second album, Manic.
"I've been really open about my struggles with reproductive health, about wanting to freeze my eggs and having endometriosis and things like that," she began.
"For a long time, I didn't think that having a family was something I was going to be able to do, and it's very, very important to me," she continued. "Then one day my OB-GYN tells me it's looking like I maybe can, and I was so moved. It felt like this ascension into a different kind of womanhood."
"All of a sudden, everything is different. I'm not going to go tour myself to death because I have nothing else to do and I'm overcompensating for not being able to have this other thing that I really want. Now, I have a choice. I've never had a choice before."
This week, Halsey revealed her current pregnancy with a series of photos on Instagram.
"Surprise!" captioned the singer, along with emojis for a baby bottle, rainbow, and an infant angel.
She tagged screenwriter Alev Aydin on her bare bump in the photos. Aydin commented on the post, "Heart so full, I love you, sweetness." Halsey replied, "I love you!!!!! And I love this mini human already!"
We're grateful to Halsey for sharing her experiences with endometriosis, infertility, and now, pregnancy. These are conditions that affect so many women.
When someone like Halsey uses her platform to discuss endometriosis, she brings it into the national conversation. Women who might be struggling with endo in secret will hopefully learn that they're not alone.
When Halsey shares images of her endometriosis scars, she's showing the world what she's overcome on her journey to motherhood.
We think that's pretty heroic.
