Olivia Culpo is opening up about the rough start to her pregnancy—and moms everywhere can probably relate.
Just days after revealing that she and her husband, Christian McCaffrey, are expecting their first baby together, the 32-year-old shared a candid TikTok video about the scary health complications she experienced early on.
In the video, filmed on Dec. 12, 2024, when she was nine weeks pregnant, Culpo gave fans an update on her makeup routine—and her pregnancy.
A diagnosis: Subchorionic hematoma
“I have been on bed rest since week two and before that I also had pneumonia, so then I was sick also for two weeks. All in all, I’ve truly been on bed rest for like four weeks,” Culpo shared.
But things got even more complicated after she recovered from pneumonia.
The former Miss Universe revealed as she was starting to recover from being “really sick,” she was diagnosed with a subchorionic hematoma—which is essentially a blood clot in the uterus.
“I was bleeding everywhere,” she said.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, a subchorionic hematoma (SCH) happens when blood collects between the chorion membrane (which attaches the baby’s amniotic sac to the uterine wall) and the uterus. While most SCHs resolve on their own, they can cause some scary symptoms—like vaginal bleeding, which Culpo experienced firsthand.
“Like two weeks of just not being able to move and then all of a sudden just like purging. It was like a lot. It was heavy,” Culpo said.
Hearing the heartbeat was a huge relief
After everything she had been through, hearing her baby’s heartbeat at her doctor’s appointment was a huge relief.
“It was really exciting to see that there was still a heartbeat,” Culpo said. “But he said, ‘You can’t go anywhere. You can’t travel. Like truly staying in bed.’”
Thankfully, Culpo shared that her pregnancy has been improving, and she’s feeling incredibly grateful.
Hoping to help other moms feel less alone
“So anyone out there with a subchorionic hematoma or SCH as they call it, I hope this video will help you if you experience a lot of intense bleeding in your first trimester. It’s not always the worst case that you’re thinking,” she said, tearing up.
She added, “I just want all of you to know, anybody out here going through any part of pregnancy feeling alone, getting news you don’t want to get, feeling like you don’t know why it’s happening to you—I’m praying for you. For everybody on their maternity journey.”
Culpo has been open about her health struggles
Culpo has been open about her health struggles in the past, including undergoing surgery for endometriosis in 2020.
Pregnancy can be unpredictable, and it’s reassuring to hear someone as high-profile as Culpo share the hard parts—not just the picture-perfect ones.
