When my family is searching for a movie to watch together in theaters, we have a few criteria: There has to be something in the movie for everyone to enjoy, the plot has to be interesting and the premise has to be fun. The ultimate goal is for us to walk out of the theater while happily recalling our favorite laugh-out-loud lines.

That’s why I’m marking our calendars for July 15, the premiere date for Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank (rated PG). Featuring Mel Brooks, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Cera and more recognizable voices, the new animated movie promises humor for all ages—which makes it an automatic win in my book!

Set in a sassy town full of cats, there has been peace for years. However, that is all threatened by the villainous Ika Chu (voiced by Ricky Gervais). The cats’ last hope is a would-be hero underdog named Hank (voiced by Michael Cera). But, will everything that’s at stake be enough for the cats and dogs to overcome their generations-old rivalry?

As the fun, adventure and laughter unfolds throughout the film, it’s sure to be a wild journey that the whole family will enjoy.

Here’s why you should join us in seeing Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank, only in theaters starting July 15.

It has throwback references that adults will love

The day has come when I watch a movie or show with my kids and struggle to get the joke or reference. But, with Paws of Fury, iconic filmmakers were dedicated to including punchlines that anyone and everyone will get.

In Paws of Fury, the hopeful heroes are canine Hank and his reluctant samurai teacher, Jimbo (voiced by Samuel L. Jackson). With the support—and a teeny bit of trepidation—from the town of cats, Hank must find the strength and bravery within himself to take down Ika Chu.

It’s an underdog story that we can all relate to

Although we may not know what it’s like to be a dog in a town of cats, most of us can relate to the feeling of having to strike up a partnership in an unlikely situation. For Hank, being a dog among cats isn’t the only challenge. He’s also an outcast who isn’t sure of himself.

Especially as a parent watching the movie with kids, those are all great talking points to guide conversations afterward. Because although we may not have the same high-stakes as Hank, there are certainly situations when we could all use a little more bravery, determination and open-mindedness.

It’s lighthearted, which we really appreciate right now

I love when a movie tells a strong story and helps teach valuable life lessons. But, honestly? What I want most of all right now is an enjoyable experience with my family. By laughing over a fun, lighthearted movie together, our family bond grows even stronger.

I have so many cherished childhood memories from going to the movies with my parents—and it’s a tradition that I’m so glad I get to continue this summer with my kids when we go see Paws of Fury.
