There’s no shortage of crazy things on the news to see and talk about—but how on earth are we supposed to explain it to our kids? This week, we’ve gathered tips on how to explain less-than-politically-correct comments to your kids, what it’s really like to live through 38 minutes of nuclear panic, and an in-depth look at one of the leading causes of death for African-American mothers. There’s some fun stuff too, so if you want to keep your kids innocent a bit longer, you can at least keep them on PawPatrol—and off CNN.

1. Imagine being asleep at home with your family and waking up to an incoming missile alert. Sounds like something out of sci-fi or an old WWI movie, right? That’s what happened to Allison Wallis and her daughter, Abigail, on the day the false alarm in Hawaii triggered a very real fear. Read this mom’s unsettling account here.

2. Aden + Anais is launching a line of super soft diapers and wipes — as soft as the swaddles that many parents are already obsessed with. The collection will feature some of the brand’s super cute signature prints. Who knew diaper changes could be beautiful. Check the line here.

3. The United States considers itself to be one of the most developed countries in the world, but when it comes to maternal safety it doesn’t even rank. The already terrifying statistics nearly triple when it comes to black women. Serena Williams’ traumatic experience perfectly illustrates the disturbing reality of maternal care across the country, and the compounding issues threatening the lives of black mothers across nearly every state.

4. One of our favorite maternity and postpartum clothing brand just launched its first line of beauty and wellness products. With Hatch MAMA, HATCH vows to overcome the challenges that many of us experience during and after pregnancy. From a belly mask to an oil that fortifies your hair, here’s the collection.

5. Doddle & Co. is going in the tank — Shark Tank, that is! The beloved brand is premiering their inventive The Pop Pacifier at 10:00pm this Sunday, January 21st. Tune in to ABC to see if they’ll snag a shark or two.
