Surprise! Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra announce the birth of their first baby via surrogate

In the happy Friday news we all needed, there’s a new Jonas baby in the world! Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas announced today on Instagram that they welcomed their first child via surrogate. 

​​”We are overjoyed to confirm that we have welcomed a baby via surrogate. We respectfully ask for privacy during this special time as we focus on our family,” Chopra states in an Instagram post, tagging Jonas in the caption. They haven’t yet shared a name for their new bundle.

Moments after posting, the congratulatory comments started rolling in. “❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ AYE!!!!!!!! Can’t wait to cuddle them!!!” wrote Lilly Singh. “congratulations! Kalpen uncle is ready to babysit! ❤️” said Kal Penn.

The couple wed in India in 2018, but today’s news comes as a surprise. Neither Jonas nor Chopra has hinted in recent months that they were expecting a baby. Though Chopra has expressed her desire for a family in the past: When asked whether they would start a family after their wedding, Chopra responded they were taking things slow. “We definitely want kids, and when the time is right, it will happen,” she told PEOPLE. “I’m very fond of children and I want to be able to do that.”

In the interview for Chopra’s Vanity Fair January 2022 cover story, she stated how hopeful and excited she and Jonas were to embark on the parenthood journey. “[Kids are] a big part of our desire for the future,” she said. “By God’s grace, when it happens, it happens.” She also noted that she and Jonas would both be comfortable slowing down their careers to make space for their family. “I’m okay with that. We’re both okay with that,” she remarked.

Chopra has another big project coming down the pipeline this year: An as-of-yet untitled comedy inspired by her wedding to Jonas that she developed in collaboration with Mindy Kaling. “That one is a really big piece of my heart for many reasons,” Chopra said to Vanity Fair, adding that the film is about the blending of her Indian culture with Jonas’ American culture.
