It’s Bridgerton season! That’s right, the steamy Shonda Rhimes hit everyone was talking about last year is back this month for season two, with more sexy scenes, scandalous courtship and more gossip than a Maury episode.

Even if we are venturing out more and more these days, TV will still have our heart and eyeballs, and this show is no exception. Hey, we all need to escape!

For parents who are so in love with the show that they are considering naming their baby after a character, we did a little leg work to look into the meanings of the character’s names to give you a head start.

Without further ado, here are the baby names inspired by Bridgerton:

Girl names inspired by Bridgerton

Alice means noble. Alice is Will’s wife and she is just that—noble. She wants to ensure that her husband makes what he deserves while boxing but also cares deeply for her children. She is a good friend of Simon’s.

Charlotte’s name is the female version of Charles and means free man—an idea that suits her character well as she strives to free herself from the incessant gossip. She’s the queen in the show. She took on this role because her husband is not well. She deems Daphne the “diamond of the season” and does everything in her power to get Daphne to marry her distant nephew. She reads Lady Whistledown incessantly and bases her daily emotions on the gossip in the paper. She will do anything to find Whistledown and demask her.

Cressida means gold; if her character’s name refers to a gold medal in trying to make other people miserable, she’s got that covered. She will do anything to get the most eligible and ideal husband. She even fakes fainting in the show and is all about ruining Daphne’s name.

Daphne, our story’s protagonist, has a few meanings; to some, it means victory, while for others it means laurel tree. According to Greek mythology, a nymph turned Daphe into a laurel tree to avoid the unwanted attention of Apollo. In the show, she’s the eldest Bridgerton daughter, meaning she’s the first to debut. She’s the “perfect” image of a wife. Throughout the show, you see that she won’t let anyone speak for her and can make her own decisions. She wants to find a match that’s more about love than necessity.

Eloise has a few possible meanings: warrior and healthy. And these both make sense for her character, full of healthy self-confidence and fighting the notion that she has to get married at all! She’s all about being Miss Independent and wanting to make a name for herself.

Francesca means free, and we love it for a free-spirited young lady! She was absent most of the season with her Aunt, likely for educational purposes.

Genevieve is French and means either white wave or simply woman. The women of London certainly to flock to Genevieve for her renowned dress-making skills, so the name does ring true! In her role as a seamstress, she picks up on all the town gossip and romances.

Hyacinth is an amazingly fragrant flower and the name of one of the youngest Bridgerton siblings.

Marina’s name is inspired by the sea, perhaps representing her ocean-deep love for George? Everyone in high society finds her beautiful. She’s with child throughout the whole season and Lady Featherington tries to hide it and find her a husband quickly so she can have the baby and not be a disgrace to the Featherington household.

Penelope’s name comes from Homer’s Odyssey. Though her name means weaver, she is unable to weave herself into the cool-girl club and remains the wallflower of the show.

Philipa is the name given to someone who loves horses; she’s one of the Featherington sisters.

Portia (Lady Featherington), the town’s unfriendly gossip, may have a name the comes from the Latin word for pig, though other sources say it means offering. We’d love for our Portia to offer a bit more kindness if we’re being honest! She is also sneaky and hyper-critical of her daughters. Lots of drama goes down and she’s at the center of it.

Prudence means good sense (though we can’t be sure it applies to fashion, in her case on the show).

Rose is, of course, the name of a beautiful flower. In the show, Rose is Daphne’s handmaid. Daphne confides in her a lot and Rose is the one that actually explains the birds and the bees to Daphne after Daphne marries Simon.

Siena is a name inspired by a Tuscan town. It turns out that there several opera houses in Tuscany, so the name is well-suited to Bridgerton’s resident operatic sensation. She’s also Anthony’s lover in the show and makes it known by the end of the season that she’s not going to change herself for a Lord. Someone needs to love her for her.

Violet is the matriarch of the Bridgerton family, and her name reflects the violet flower or the color purple. She puts pressure on Anthony to fill the role of man of the house.

Boy names inspired by Bridgerton

Anthony is the oldest of the Bridgeton children. His name means priceless one (though according to the characters of the show, it would be more appropriate to name him something that means “rake”). He’s the eldest Bridgerton and after his father passed, he’s now “the man of the house” meaning he has to find suitable men for all his sisters. He’s in love with Siena, but can’t bring her into high society because of her societal rank, so he sneaks around with her. He takes pride in his family, but a part of him wants to run away and not be so pressured by London’s high society.

Archibald (aka Lord Featherington) means bold. Though his character is certainly not as bold as his wife, Portia, he certainly is boldly-slimy. So it works.

Benedict means blessed; in the case of Bridgerton, it seems to mean “blessed” with artistic ability. He and his sister Eloise are close (you can see it in their demeanor).

Colin’s name meaning is as adorable as he is—it means pup! Like a puppy next to a dog, Colin is constantly in his older brother’s shadows.

Friedrich is closely connected to the name Frederick and means peaceful ruler. He’s the queen’s distant nephew and a true prince charming. He seeks Daphne, but Cressida will do anything to marry him because he’s the Prince of Prussia. He steps aside once he sees that Daphne and Simon are meant to be. A true gentleman.

George means either farmer or earth. We never actually meet Sir George, Marina’s lover. But we know that he used to sneak Marina snacks during long sermons at church.

Gregory is derived from the Greek name ‘Gregorios,’ which means alert and watchful. He is the youngest Bridgerton.

Henry means ruler of the home. In this case, perhaps it is the ruler of the home party? We first meet Henry when Benedict criticizes his artwork. Then Henry invites Benedict over to his house for an art session and well, complexity ensues.

Nigel means champion; though his character is most certainly not a champion of romance or good ideas. He’s much older than Daphne and the suitor that Anthony tries to get Daphne to marry—until he physically assaults Daphne in the garden.

Phillip is a name for someone who loves horses. He’s the younger brother of Sir George. He’s noble in the sense that he vows to marry Marina and care for the child because his brother would have wanted to do the same with Marina.

Simon’s name’s meanings all come from the idea of listening and hearing. And we get it—we could listen to him all day. Simon is a true heartthrob! But he refuses to have children because his father treated him poorly and he refuses to carry on the Hastings name. All that until he meets Daphne, of course…

Will means protector, and is therefore well suited to the boxer of our tale! Will is married to Alice and is Simon’s best friend. He’ll do anything to protect his family and ensure their well-being.
