A reliable, toxin-free deodorant is SO necessary.

Aside from facial sunscreen, deodorant is by far the most important step in my morning beauty routine. Iâve worn antiperspirant deodorants practically every day since middle school and at this point Iâve worn it so long that I apply it on auto-pilot.
These days, natural deodorants formulated without antiperspirant have been growing in popularity. (By natural deodorant I mean formulas that are also free of aluminum, parabens, formaldehydes and formaldehyde-releasing agents.)
One main difference in the performance of deodorant versus antiperspirants? No matter the brand, antiperspirant deodorants use aluminum to block sweat ducts from producing sweat. Despite the prevailing theory that aluminum is linked to breast cancer, there is no actual science to support that. However, aluminum can be irritating to some, so avoiding it in that case is totally valid! Sans aluminum, these natural deodorants are formulated to eliminate stinkiness, but not the extra moisture we try to keep at bay.
Iâve tried enough clean deodorant to know they are not all created equal. At best some do absolutely nothing. (Apologies to my fellow pilates classmates.) At worst, they can cause painful and itchy rashes that look like you rubbed your pits with poison ivy. (Just me?) But the very best do their job and do it well.
And just so you knowâdonât stress over sweat. Sweat itself doesnât smell; only when it mixes with bacteria on your skin does it create unwanted odor.
To get a better idea of whatâs going on, we asked a dermatologist to weigh in. âWhile antiperspirants work to fight smell by clogging your pores, natural deodorants are non-toxic and allow the good bacteria in your skin to reduce the odor naturally. Bottom line is, natural deodorants are far better for your skin and overall health,â says Dr. Sheel Desai Solomon Board Certified Raleigh Durham North Carolina Dermatologist. âInstead of aluminum, all-natural deodorants rely on plant-based powders and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to help absorb wetness without any of the controversial chemicals.â
The bottom line: Now more than ever, people are making the switch to non-toxic, all-natural and eco-friendly products. Among those, deodorant is one of the hardest ones to let go of. But if you find a natural one that doesnât cause skin irritation and infection, it can be a total game-changer.
