Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are having a baby girl! The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced that they are expecting a daughter this summer.

The couple sat down with Oprah Winfrey for a wide-ranging interview where they discussed the events that led to their separation from the royal family. During that conversation, Meghan and Harry confirmed that their unborn child is a girl and is expected to be born this summer.

“Amazing,” Harry said when asked about the news. “Just grateful, to have any child, any one or two. But to have a boy and a girl, what more can you ask for? We’ve got the four of us and our two dogs.”

The couple also added that they plan to stop at two children. “Two is it,” they laughed.

A spokesperson for the couple announced last month that “We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child.” Archie will be two years old in May.

This comes months after Markle shared her pregnancy loss story in the New York Times, helping others who have experienced loss to feel less alone. She shared, “I tried to imagine how we’d heal.” As the family prepares to welcome their rainbow baby, we wish them continued healing and joy. And we hope that the world treats Markle more kindly than it has in the past.

The intense and sometimes exploitive media coverage of her first pregnancy was a factor in Prince Harry releasing a statement on the matter. It reads, in part: “My wife has become one of the latest victims of a British tabloid press that wages campaigns against individuals with no thought to the consequences—a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year, throughout her pregnancy and while raising our newborn son…There is a human cost to this relentless propaganda, specifically when it is knowingly false and malicious, and though we have continued to put on a brave face—as so many of you can relate to—I cannot begin to describe how painful it has been.”

Markle also publicly discussed how being so highly scrutinized during her first pregnancy and as a new mom has impacted her. In a documentary that aired in October of 2019, she famously stated that she was not okay.

“Any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging,” she said. “And then when you have a newborn, you know. And especially as a woman, it’s a lot. So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed.”

The couple has since moved to the United States, and in January announced their nonprofit organization, Archewell, which seeks to “uplift and unite communities—local and global, online and offline—one act of compassion at a time.”

Prince Harry has previously made statements about how a second child would complete the couple’s family, telling British Vogue that he could only see himself having “Two [children], maximum.”

We hope that the Duchess of Sussex can enjoy this pregnancy without having to deny outrageous claims or worry about her personal communications being published.

Of course, we are excited for this pregnancy and can’t wait to hear more details about it, but we respect that those details are Markle’s to share if and when she chooses. We are not entitled to know her birth plan.

Every mother has the right to decide how much she wants to share about her pregnancy, birth and postpartum period (even if she’s royalty).
