When my firstborn was a baby, a fellow mom gave me a bag of hand-me-downs. At the top of the bag, sat a pair of tiny fleece Zutano booties.

“Those are the best things ever. They’re the only thing that stayed on my kid’s feet,” she offered.

At that point, I’d lost so many socks and crib shoes it almost seemed logical to duct tape them to his pant legs. (I didn’t.) With the cold Vermont winter upon us, I was ever so grateful—but skeptical. My little Houdini managed to slip out of just about anything, so why would these be any different?

Oh, how wrong I was! The brilliant snap and elastic design not only stayed put while he crawled, kicked and yanked on them, but did so without being too tight or restrictive. I ended up amassing quite a few pairs and they were one of the few things I held onto and handed down to my daughter six years later.

I’m far from the only one obsessed with Zutano’s footwear. In fact, the 30-year-old brand tops the “best first shoe” list of many Motherly editors whose little ones rocked both their booties and leather shoes.

This week Zutano launched a brand new style and we want to be sure new mamas get clued in ASAP. For one the moccasin-style is AH-dorable. But more importantly, they’re the only soft shoe that offers a non-slip bottom. Those first steps are wobbly enough—the last thing toddlers need is a
slick leather sole under them.

They also feature an insole that’s cushioned with high-density foam, a soft leather upper and a sturdy, flexible outsole that makes it easy for babies to bend and move their feet. The Zutanomoccasins join a growing collection of first shoes that we expect mamas to be singing the praises of for plenty more decades to come.
