Kim Kardashian says baby Chicago is ‘definitely her own person’

Kim Kardashian has never shied away from speaking publicly—and candidly—about her family or her struggles with pregnancy. She has, however, been fairly quiet about her third child, Chicago West, since welcoming the baby girl via a gestational surrogate last month.

Now, the 37-year-old mom of three is giving Keeping Up With the Kardashians fans the news they’ve been waiting for.

When a Twitter user asked Kardashian for an update on little Chicago, the reality star took the time to answer her fan’s question, replying, “The sweetest! Best baby! She looks a tiny bit like North and a tiny bit like Saint but definitely her own person!”

KUWTK fans got their first look at the youngest member of Kardashian and husband Kayne West’s family during Kylie Jenner’s birth announcement video for daughter Stormi. Jenner released her video earlier this month.

In September, Kardashian confirmed that she and West were expecting their third child using a gestational surrogate—the term for a person who is not biologically related to the baby they’re carrying. She received intense scrutiny for choosing surrogacy, with some fans suggesting that Kardashian made the decision to “save her body.”

Last month, Kardashian published a heartfelt letter to her website explaining why the power couple had chosen gestational surrogacy. The health issues Kardashian faced during her last two pregnancies prevented her from carrying another child; if she were to get pregnant again, she explains in her post, it would risk her and her baby’s life. Kardashian and West explored all their options, and decided a gestational surrogate would be best.

But the choice was far from easy. “[A]nyone who says or thinks it’s the easy way out is completely wrong,” Kardashian writes. “People assume it’s better because you don’t have to deal with the physical changes, pain or complications with delivery, but for me it was so hard to not carry my own child, especially after I carried North and Saint.”

Kardashian makes an important point in her post: Couples who choose traditional or gestational surrogacy don’t do so lightly. There are so many factors that have to be considered before going forward, such as how a person’s health would be affected by carrying a child. Surrogacy also doesn’t mean the parents are any less of a mother or father.

Choosing surrogacy may have been an emotionally difficult process, but, Kardashian adds in her letter, her family is nonetheless blessed. It also seems that Baby Chicago is just as cute as North and Saint, and, more importantly, happy and healthy. That’s really all that matters in the end!
