They're fashionable and chafe-free by design. What's not to love?
Ok. I admit it. When biker shorts popped up on the fashion scene again last year, I had zero interest in riding the trend. I mean, I'm not completely unwilling to work outside my skinny jeans + T-shirt comfort zone, but I'm no style trailblazer. I prefer to hop on board when a look is mainstream enough I can buy it at Target or H & M and test the waters on a sensible budget. (Like rompers, boiler suits and boxy crop tops of late.)
Not to mention, I did this the first time around as a tween in the early 90's. As a general rule, I don't look back at my 10-year-old self for fashion tips, and frankly one go-round with things like Elizabeth Arden Sunflowers perfume and crushed velvet Blossom-inspired hats seems like enough.
Biker shorts, however? I've been convinced to jump back in. For one thing, they're the comfy athleisure we've all grown accustomed to this year—just shorter. The rises are high so everything feels tucked in and cared for. Also, who really likes regular shorts? NO ONE. THAT'S WHO. No matter how long or short they are they always end up bunched in your nether regions, threatening small brush fires due to thigh chafe. Bike shorts on the other hand, stay put and are thigh-friendly by design. WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE HERE?
They're also impressively versatile. Whether you're hauling kids to soccer practice or heading out on a much-deserved date night, there's a biker shorts outfit to be rocked. Mamas of all shapes and sizes, rocking a bump or just a regular belly, I'm declaring biker shorts the leggings of summer. Want to get on board? I've rounded up the looks and the goods so you can discover your new summer staple ASAP.
From sporty to sophisticated, these are the biker shorts outfit looks you need.
For a sporty look:
Pair your athletic-style biker shorts with an oversize sweatshirt, crop tee or even a sports bra if you're more daring. With high-waisted styles, even the shortest tops don't feel quite so exposed. Sneakers are an obvious footwear choice, but we're really feeling the chunky sandals this season too.
Reviews had me at "camel toe-resistant." Another huge plus? No seam on the thigh which keeps them smooth and dig-free.
Whether you're headed to yoga, brunch or just an afternoon in the backyard, Lululemon's shorts version of their popular Align style are a no-brainer.
The sustainable and eco-friendly threads from Ivysister are low on waste and high on style. Their biker shorts feature a flattering high rise that doesn't roll down and are made with 88% recycled materials.
If you're feeling a little wild
Date nights and Sunday brunches are back on the calendar. If you want a dressed-up look that feels just as cozy as those sweats you've been living in, biker shorts might be your new BFF. Try a pair of faux leather or leopard print shorts paired with a plain white tee and denim jacket or even a blazer and heels. It's too hot for skinny jeans anyway.
No one does leggings better than Spanx. Engineered with the same brilliant fit and fabrics as the pant version, these super sexy faux leather biker shorts are begging to hit the town.
With 13K+ ratings on Amazon and over a dozen colors and patterns to choose from, it's hard to go wrong. And if you think wearing biker shorts means giving up your precious pockets, THINK AGAIN. These bad boys have not one but TWO pockets to stash your phone, and other essentials.
Shiny leopard? YUP. Perhaps my post-pandemic wardrobe aspirations are high but after a year of barely getting dressed these feel like a must.
For a sophisticated look
If your weekends are filling up with baby showers and birthday parties, consider a pair of biker shorts and a button-down (opened or closed) instead of the typical dress option. It's fresh and unfussy but still totally comfortable.
Girlfriend Collective has the leggings game on lock. Their bike shorts get the same treatment. They're available in an impressive range of sizes and colors, so if you fall in love, it's easy to stock up.
How about two trends at once? This super affordable tie-dye version would look awesome with a crisp white button down and black heeled sandals.
Honestly, is there a more maternity-friendly summer staple than biker shorts? Whether you wear them solo or under your favorite maternity dress, they keep everything comfy, tucked in and chafe-free.
Girlfriend Collective gets rave reviews for basically all the things. Their fabrics are butter-soft, they hold up like champs and never betray you by turning sheer when you bend over. Their maternity line offers the same quality with a little extra support for your growing bump.
Forget basic black. Own it, mama. Storq's signature shorts come in black and sage but why not take a walk on the wild side?
Want a little function with your fashion? The Active Maternity Bike Shorts with Crossover Panel from Ingrid & Isabel are designed to support both your belly and your back. Wear it up or fold it down!
