Ok. I admit it. When biker shorts popped up on the fashion scene again last year, I had zero interest in riding the trend. I mean, I’m not completely unwilling to work outside my skinny jeans + T-shirt comfort zone, but I’m no style trailblazer. I prefer to hop on board when a look is mainstream enough I can buy it at Target or H & M and test the waters on a sensible budget. (Like rompers , boiler suits and boxy crop tops of late.)

Not to mention, I did this the first time around as a tween in the early 90’s. As a general rule, I don’t look back at my 10-year-old self for fashion tips, and frankly one go-round with things like Elizabeth Arden Sunflowers perfume and crushed velvet Blossom-inspired hats seems like enough.

Biker shorts, however? I’ve been convinced to jump back in. For one thing, they’re the comfy athleisure we’ve all grown accustomed to this year—just shorter. The rises are high so everything feels tucked in and cared for. Also, who really likes regular shorts? NO ONE. THAT’S WHO. No matter how long or short they are they always end up bunched in your nether regions, threatening small brush fires due to thigh chafe . Bike shorts on the other hand, stay put and are thigh-friendly by design. WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE HERE?

They’re also impressively versatile. Whether you’re hauling kids to soccer practice or heading out on a much-deserved date night, there’s a biker shorts outfit to be rocked. Mamas of all shapes and sizes, rocking a bump or just a regular belly, I’m declaring biker shorts the leggings of summer. Want to get on board? I’ve rounded up the looks and the goods so you can discover your new summer staple ASAP.

From sporty to sophisticated, these are the biker shorts outfit looks you need.

For a sporty look:

Pair your athletic-style biker shorts with an oversize sweatshirt, crop tee or even a sports bra if you’re more daring. With high-waisted styles, even the shortest tops don’t feel quite so exposed. Sneakers are an obvious footwear choice, but we’re really feeling the chunky sandals this season too.
