When wash day comes around, you might not always have the time or energy to actually wash your hair. Whether you’re trying to prolong a blowout or you want to add some volume after the gym, dry shampoo is the way to go. The best dry shampoos will revive your hair regardless of what it’s been through. The good stuff won’t leave any sticky or powdery residue on your scalp either.

How to use dry shampoo

Hold the can a few inches away and spray your roots. I like to spray in chunks. So, grab a section of hair, spray along the root and do the same to the other side. You don’t need to go overboard! A few sprays in the places you need it most should do the trick. If it’s a powder, simply dash it on your roots. Wait a couple of minutes to let it set hen, brush your hair like normal and/or rake your fingers through your hair and rub the product in so there’s no visible traces. Shake before use, per individual bottle instructions.

Is dry shampoo bad for your hair?

So, what does dry shampoo do? Dry shampoo livens up your hair. It absorbs oils and odors. It can prolong a style so you don’t have wash and restyle as often. The dry shampoos listed below are paraben and sulfate free, according to their manufacturer’s. Most are also certified “clean” from Sephora and/or Ulta.

With aerosol products, there is a risk of benzene exposure. And, aerosol products, like dry shampoos, have been recalled in the past for benzene exposure. You can read up on dry shampoo recalls here.

Dry shampoo powder

Dry shampoo powder is made with fewer and cleaner ingredients. Typically, dry shampoo powders contain less potentially harmful ingredients or byproducts. The most common ingredient in all dry shampoo powders is arrowroot—a mattifying powder that absorbs oils and adds volume. The trick to a clean application is to use a fluffy powder brush. Shake the dry shampoo powder onto the brush, give it a couple taps (just like you would when you’re applying loose face powder) and then brush it along your roots.
