The coronavirus is totally taking over our news feeds and while it is important it can also be anxiety-including for some of us. It might seem like it’s the only issue happening right now, but we need to remember that while COVID-19 is certainly disrupting daily life our lives are still continuing.

People are announcing pregnancies and births, parents and kids are sharing touching moments, teens are coming up with ways to help others. There is so much good news happening if we look for it.

These are the stories that made us smile this week:

Viral video shows the moment this little girl learned she is gorgeous

Ariyonna is just 4 years old but she was seen around the world this week and the lesson she learned in her viral moment is one we all need to spread to our children. The preschooler was getting her hair done by Shabria Redmond when she glanced at her own reflection and said quietly to herself, “I’m so ugly.”

The moment was captured on video and it is absolutely heartbreaking.

Redmond, a stylist and rapper from the Atlanta area, was not about to let her little client think that for one second. “Don’t say that! Don’t say that. Don’t say that. You are so pretty,” she tells Ariyonna in a video posted to Instagram.

“When you look at yourself, you’re supposed to say, I’m so pretty. You are so pretty, do you hear me? You’ve got the prettiest little dimples. You are too cute,” she told Ariyonna, who started to cry.

Redmond gave her a hug and said “You’re gonna make me cry. You’re not ugly…You are so pretty. You have this beautiful chocolate-y skin … you are beautiful, black is beautiful, and if nobody ever tell you, I will tell you, you are gorgeous.”

Michelle Obama reposted the touching video to her own Instagram account, drawing more attention to the importance of this conversation and completely agreeing with Redmond. “Ariyonna, you are gorgeous. In a world that sometimes tries to say otherwise, I want to tell you—and every other beautiful, intelligent, brave black girl—just how precious you are,” Obama wrote.

According to Redmond, little Ariyonna “comes from a great home & loving mother.” As Redmond explained on Instagram sometimes, despite parents’ best efforts, kids take in damaging messages from the wider culture. “I just think when kids go to school they learn and pick up sooo much different things that they don’t know the definition but they know the feeling,” she explains.

And that is why it us up to all of us to tell little girls like Ariyonna that they are beautiful (and brave and smart). Children need to hear these things, not just from their own moms, but from all of us.

Mother + son go viral after beating cancer together

One cancer diagnosis in a family is hard, but two at once—that’s unbelievably difficult. And that’s what Vici Rigby and her son, George went through when the British mom was diagnosed with bowel cancer just months before she was told her 4-year-old had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.

For four years the pair went through treatments for their cancers and finally both mother and son are reportedly cancer-free. “You never think the day is going to come. You get into the routine of hospital appointments and planning your lives around that,” said, according to the London Economic .

“When George was diagnosed, it’s hard to put into words really, the rug was pulled from underneath us again but this time it was our 4-year-old boy…I remember thinking we now had to hope for two miracles, for us both to get better.”

The Rigbys got their miracles and their story is giving other families hope.

CVS extends free pharmacy delivery during coronavirus pandemic

Good news for anyone who is self-isolating during the coronavirus pandemic. This week CVS announced it is waiving charges for home delivery of prescription medications in an effort to keep the virus from spreading. “When you’re in a position to increase convenience and help provide some peace of mind, you act. As long as COVID-19 continues to be a threat, we’ll maintain a relentless focus on how best to serve our patients, members and customers,” says Troyen Brennan, M.D., M.P.H., Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, CVS Health.

“The latest steps we’re taking will help ensure patients of all ages have every option available to them when it comes to filling prescriptions,” Brennan explained in a news release.

As Motherly previously reported, government agencies are suggesting families make sure they have an adequate supply of prescription medications at hand, but if your family needs to self-isolate on short notice this may not be possible. That’s why having the delivery fee waived is so helpful. But instead of answering the door like in the CVS commercial anyone who is self-isolating should ask the delivery person to just leave the package.

Grubhub, Postmates, Instacart and other delivery services are also offering non-contact delivery services to protect their delivery drivers from those who are self-isolating.

Pregnant Katy Perry got to tell her dying grandmother about the baby

Katy Perry’s grandmother passed away at the age of 99, but not before Perry was able to tell her something very important. Perry posted a series of pictures and videos of her grandmother on Instagram this week. In one of the videos her grandmother, Ann, is in a hospital bed and Katy is by her side. Perry tells her that she and her fiancé, Orlando Bloom, are expecting.

“I just wanted to tell you, I know you’re not feeling well, but I wanted to share some exciting news with you,” Perry tells her grandmother. “You remember me, Katy? I’m going to tell you that I’m going to have a baby. I’m pregnant, Grandma! Katy is finally pregnant, she’s the last one, but I have a baby inside me and I wanted to tell that to you.”

The video is so relatable to anyone who has ever experienced welcoming a new family member around the same time as saying goodbye to another.

“She was a wonderful grandma and I will forever carry some of her in me,” Perry writes on Instagram. Maybe baby Perry will be another Ann.

Viral website makes a coronavirus handwashing poster for any song

what went viral this week a little girl is told she is beautiful songs to wash your hands to 0 Motherly

A 17-year-old named William Gibson is helping the world fight boredom and the coronavirus. Gibson figured the advice to sing Happy Birthday while washing one’s hands is kind of boring, so he built Wash Your Lyrics, a website that allows you to choose a song and have a handwashing poster created for that song.

“It just felt so sad singing Happy Birthday to myself every time I washed my hands,” he told the BBC.

So he built a website that allows people to enter a song and artist generate a poster matching the lyrics to the washing routine recommended by World Health Organization. The BBC reports Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen is the most popular song so far.

This is so helpful for parents who are trying to get kids engaged in good hygiene. Pick their favorite song, make a poster and hang it in the bathroom!
